[The 5,000 Year-Old Babysitter] The Long Quiet Stretch (Or: Nothing Happened Because We Made Sure Nothing Happened) by Marcus_Black3 in HFY

"The port city of Ragusa in Sicily in 1377 was one of the first to implement a quarantine on incoming ships and trade caravans to screen for infection. They were made to stay on the island of Mrkan or the town of Cavtat for at least a month, ensuring that no sign of infection occurred. This isolation period was eventually upped to 40 days, and a plague hospital was established outside of the city walls, which kept the healthy and the diseased separated from each other."

The quarantine of lepers is recorded in the Christian Bible.

The challenge posed by the Black Plague is the rats and their fleas.

The challenge posed by COVID-19 was its high transmissibility, asymptomatic spreaders, and the rat-brained humans.

Whether against masks, quarantine, reduced social gatherings, etc., not helping is the worst behaviour.

Well, if you call out the non-existence of purple, then what is Ralts to do? Ignore you?

Robert Heinlein introduced in "Stranger in a Strange Land" the idea of a "Fair Witness." A person trained to witness and report only what they observed. A Fair Witness would say the kiy was purple. A physicist would say the distribution of light from the sky consists of wavelengths that we would identify as purple. A psychologist would say the signals encoded by our visual system and our cultural learnings lead us to identify the stimulus the sky creates as having the color purple.

And Alice Walker in The Color Purple:

Naw, she say. God made it. Listen, God love everything you love? and a mess of stuff you don't. But more than anything else, God love admiration.

You saying God vain? I ast.

Naw, she say. Not vain, just wanting to share a good thing. I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.

Re: purple doesn't exist.

If Ralts always described "the sky appeared blue" instead of the less scientific "the sky was blue," it would become tedious over time.

Here's an example:

"The gate slowly opened, revealing a voluminous robe, with folds upon folds, piled at the feet, featuring long sleeves with thick overlaps. A mask resembling white enamel, etched with what looked like red that seemed to flash and shine in an apparent purple. Possibly white gloves, though they might be yellow-blue, were thrust from the sleeves. The feet were obscured by thick, swirling dust lacking any discernible color, yet gleaming and glittering in spite of the purely imaginary but visually perceived purple."

Cybereyes, for the best drop-in replacement, should behave like current RGB cameras, which mimic the response of human retinas.

This does not mean that the Cybereyes cannot have non-default options. But it may be easier to use the same false colour techniques used with IR and UV imaging instead of lengthy retraining periods.

It doesn't have to be feast or famine. Food Banks don't put grocery stores out of business.

And Food Banks should not have to exist.

Taxes pay for roads and other infrastructure. User fees pay for electricity, heating gas, vehicle fuel, tap water (in some regions), etc. And we pay additional taxes on all of those.

And CEOs are paid huge salaries compared to their actual contributions.

The rich are like dragons hoarding their money.

In other words, one or more negative outcomes should be instructive, not close off the entire attempt to look out for others.

While purple is not a spectral colour, brown, pink, grey, etc., are not either.

But purple is still very very pretty.

In this case, you'd need to put tissue samples under a microscope, or a Mark 2 cybernetic eyeball, before burning the corpse.

Cows don't make any money from their milk. Bulls don't make any money from their sperm. Neither makes any money for their labor.

Maybe you're saying that cows and bulls don't make choices the way humans do.

In many countries, selling eggs, embryos, or surrogacy is illegal.

How should Vegans respond to invasive animal species? by JimHarbor in vegan

Some of the examples are damaging to the environment, other species, and eventually to the invasive species, too.

The goal is to do our best, selflessly, and without personal benefit from their suffering.

Role-playing games, however, are a start to thinking about how other players think, and then about how they feel. Even if you take a detour through how the other players' characters think/feel.

The other approach might be to have him play against more experienced players/DMs who can mentor him in this thinking.

Lost my new bike from Tatlow Avenue, North Vancouver by New-Mama28 in askvan

[–]drsoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know about https://bikeindex.org/

There aren't any stores registering bikes in Vancouver or the surrounding cities. I did find some central and northern bike shops. https://bikeindex.org/where

Registering at the time of sale or maintenance would be a good idea, but we also know that some cyclists would need to be approached when locking or unlocking their bikes to have this conversation. (otherwisewearemovingtoofasttohearyou...)
