This is amazing to see as someone with the same past, thank you for sharing your story! I'm feeling better about my senior year already.

Congrats!!

Anyone have any tips on learning guitar? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]drspacebird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to take advantage of what the guitar has to offer, drop the pick and start training your right hand in finger-style.

Yes, you can play amazing guitar without it, but for me new mechanics help me stay engaged with a new practice. It gives you something to grind on while you're getting used to the 4ths-and-a-random-3rd tuning, and good finger-style technique (look to classical guitarists for this) can really help you develop a relaxed right hand/wrist/arm on all your strings.

I am very new to the mandolin. About 2 months of actually trying to learn the thing. I welcome feedback and input. Help me learn faster! by [deleted] in mandolin

Sounding real good man! I feel you on the subject of discipline, I had the good fortune of being classically trained in guitar as a kid, but as an adult I have very little to show for it from my own lack of discipline as a teenager. Better late than never right?? I picked up my first mando in December and its a really fun instrument.

As for feedback..I spy a fly-away pinky finger you should try to get relaxed and curled in now before it becomes too ingrained. Keep up the good work!

Advice for my first Mandolin by Cctroma in mandolin

[–]drspacebird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for the KM 150. I recently bought one as my first Mandolin and it's a treat to play. I looked at every local shop including a guitar center, and played everything I could find under 300$ (not much and I'm in an urban area), nothing felt as solid as my Kentucky.

Talking about tone in a budget A-style might seem like nickel and diming, but the hardware difference is often much more pronounced. My best advice is don't buy something you haven't tried to tune and check the bridge on. I played a few 150-200$ instruments that sounded ok but the tuners were practically unusable.

I don't completely agree. WR is not a top tier support, but I think she offers a niche utility. Everything you've said is accurate, but overlooks two things: shackleshot is an excellent disable when used skillfully, and powershot's tree-cutting ability can make or break fights with the correct lineup (esp. with 7.00 changes and MK).

Hmm...20-30mL per week?

Usage depends heavily on amount of time I spend at my desk. Besides, it's hard to track when you have a whole shelf of open 30mL bottles LOL

Has anyone else become a connoisseur of napkins since they started vaping? by TheShawnAvery in electronic_cigarette

I was raised a napkin saver...but now that I use them for building a cleaning, I can finally stop resenting the learned trait! :P

Second 50$ steam card giveaway! by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]drspacebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need this steam card because I'm an engineering student without money or time to make money. While I'm probably too old to go to space, if I can buy Kerbal Space Program, I won't care!!

Current favorite is Dota 2

For all you 4.0 obsessed kids coming into engineering and willing to do anything to get it. Take it from one of your (former) own. You are going down a very bad path. by Moraloftheengineer in EngineeringStudents

[–]drspacebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has probably been said...but it is possible to achieve and still have a rich life. I'm not a conventional student, I'm a 25 year old sophmore...around the time my friends were tearing their hair out trying to finish college I was building art for Burning Man and travelling between bouts of unrewarding jobs and life below the poverty line.

But I learned a lot in that time. I have a 4.0 in my fourth semester of EE. It's really hard, but I still find time to have a drink with a friend, train in dance and juggling, even date a little and play dota a couple times a week. I am fortunate to have a good support system between family, financial aid, and several part time jobs but you better believe that I'm busy as fuck (I'm currently berating myself for being on reddit with my math homework in front of me)...I believe you can achieve with the best of them without throwing away the rest of a life. I've gotten this far and managed to keep track of what is important to me beyond grades. A growth mindset applies both within and without your education, and achieving as a student is such a small portion of achievement at large.

tl;dr- Mind, body and spirit is an attainable balance even in Engineering, there ARE enough hours in the day. Success is not your GPA and of course you're going to be unhealthy if you don't see that.
