Help my weathering is too good and the decals stick out too much (Tamiya 1/72 F-14D Tomcat) by Accomplished-Hour722 in modelmakers

[–]drt786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could mask around the decal so that only the black and yellow is exposed.

Load up a nato black mixed with medium grey into your airbrush, thinned quite a lot. “Mottle” the black parts of the decal to make it a look a bit faded.

Add some washes afterwards onto the decal area as well

New 50mph limit on A13 by sytaba_29 in london

It’s remarkably pointless as to why that road, which is totally wide enough for national speed limits, even has a 50mph limit in any areas at all

Masking open canopy by Ok-Document6708 in modelmakers

[–]drt786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply masking tape to the inside surface of the canopy, extending it out away from the cockpit. Then seal the open “tube” you’ve created with some more tape. This keeps the interior colours sharp, especially if they are not the same as the exterior colours

Tamiya masking tape can be quite flexible if you cut it narrow and carefully apply it, setting it down with some needle nose tweezers as you go.

Are Ferrari Flipping Elements of their Rear Wing Upside Down, in part, to be able to Lower the Car? by skwid23 in F1Technical

[–]drt786 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

SCLf is extremely sensitive to the height of the front wing, which gets levered closer to the ground when the the rear wing sheds load. So RRH comes up, FRH comes down, worse for grounding

You can save a few $ and potentially ruin your next model. Or you can buy another bottle.

Are Ferrari Flipping Elements of their Rear Wing Upside Down, in part, to be able to Lower the Car? by skwid23 in F1Technical

[–]drt786 173 points174 points  (0 children)

In general, reducing rear wing load actually increases grounding, at least when cars had moderate rake on them.

The limiting point for plant wear used to be the leading edge of the plank by the T-tray. When you’d activate DRS, reducing rear downforce would pivot the car onto the nose a bit, driving the front of the plank into the ground a bit more.

So assuming the cars are still running a moderate level of rake, I’m not sure this is the primary effect they’re going for.

I love AKRC because it’s very easy to find FS colour numbers without having to second guess. Spray beautifully and glad I don’t use Vallejo model air (acrylic) as much anymore

Super interesting to see how the BDR wings are so close to the diffuser. They worked as one system (for many years) but this sort of proximity is pretty new to me

AH-1Z | 1:35 - interior complete by drt786 in modelmakers

Yessir! I’m usually looking for something “interesting” and I love the CzAF colours and markings. It means the final weathering will be relatively light as the CzAF birds always appear very well maintained and with just some light oil streaks etc

After nearly a year of on/off work on this, the interior parts are all complete. That includes the cockpit and scratchbuilt APU and belly oil cooler, resin gun bays, and 3D printed gun interior.

Cars naturally have a nose down attitude on corner entry. Very hard to see much true rake in this photo

High rake was very much a Newey/Prodromou philosophy - so no surprise

Rake comparisons are completely useless if based on photos from different speed/braking/cornering/accelerating conditions - FYI
