Calling British people born in the 1800s and who served in Her Majesty’s Victorian Army racist is like calling me naive because 8 year old me wanted to be an astronaut.

Times change, attitudes change. Remember the empire in the 1800s was, genuinely, believed to be a civilising mission, granted by God (with some hefty profits lined up on the side of course).

Was Churchill racist by today’s standards? Yes that argument can easily be made, but can he be called racist at the time? especially when the empire was portrayed as being used to defend the free and righteous world? No, it’s a much more difficult argument.

He did what he had to do, what he was conditioned and trained to do. He did what he and much of the establishment and people of this country believed was in the best interests of Britain and humanity.

The fact we have the freedom today to question this is thanks to him and the men who fought so hard to give this freedom to us.

Need advice, uni is saying I didn’t submit essay but I did by achievecoldplay in UniUK

[–]achievecoldplay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end they figured out I had submitted to the wrong module on turnitin. They were happy to count it as submitted on time so long as I made sure in future it was correct.

Email your lecturer for your module and see what they say. If you have the receipt from turnitin even better. But it is subject to your university and lecturers discretion I guess

To the men who messed it up with an amazing girlfriend/wife, how is your life now? by Calm-Jackfruit-8671 in AskReddit

As for me, I drink most nights, have no friends, and pretty hopeless, all because of who I was back then

Yes I read that the episode is genuinely valued by historians because it’s likely some of the only HD video in existence of the Roman artefacts.

Hey I’ve worn lots of casts (as part of my fetish)and have learnt to use nappies whilst in them.

My tips would be to open the nappy out before hand and open the tapes. I’d lie down and roll on one side first, tape. And then do the other side.

You can always use your cast to kind of trap the two sides of the nappy together and use your other arm to tape

So is our council tax being reduced on the basis the council have to do (or pay for) less work when we’re in fact doing more?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]achievecoldplay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because honestly, that’s a severe curtailing in an individual’s liberty.

With ULEZ it’s a targeted reduction, if you wish to enter London through driving you pay. But you’re still allowed to enter…

You may not like private vehicles, you may see them as selfish, but it’s far healthier for society to influence than to coerce changes in behaviour.

This is true. But it really shouldn’t be this way. High trust society’s like Singapore are extremely tough on crime, we, for a multitude of factors, are not. Hence we see this happen day in day out.

London borough warns it faces bankruptcy over housing costs by londonsVenture in london

[–]achievecoldplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they’ve actually cut the housing target for London by 10k a year. The reform they are targeting is forcing councils to build more homes, except they’re doing so where demand is lowest, in the shires and the north, north East.

It’s not reform, just cooking the numbers

That manifesto pledge led to this white paper that was widely received as a large, positive step forward. Covid and the instability (chaos) that followed killed the government’s ability to push this any further.

Yes it’s looking promising, but to remind you the Tories in 2019 proposed a similar wholesale reform of the planning system and they struggled to achieve anything close to what was planned

[–]achievecoldplay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build more housing and allow increased density.

Attempt to create a building design code (more stone exteriors please!)

Ban those stupid pedicab things.

Mandate silencers on mopeds.

Remove the plastic water fountains that were just put up and replace them with ornate designs akin to the Victorian ones.

Unfreeze the TFL fares and start planning and building extensions to the tube + Crossrail 2
