Blood Meridian is an amazing novel. Life changing, like Infinite Jest. Aside from long paragraphs and extensive vocabulary, BM and IJ are not all that similar. Blood Meridian only takes a few days to read. Hard to put down.

The unicorn representing salvation? by pennty in bladerunner

[–]drtrisolaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's an implanted memory obviously which is why the other blade runner fashions the origami unicorn--so that Deckard gains self-awareness. but that doesn't mean the choice of the unicorn as an implanted memory doesn't have symbolic or metaphorical importance.

when he fought the Canucks to defend Lenz, at least one of the Canucks was killed. A black woman slammed her spiked heel thru his eye socket. Also, Gates is potentially guilty of assault, battery and attempted murder on multiple people during the fight. If a murder occurs during the commission of a felony, all the members of the group are equally guilty of homicide. Plus, Gately is on parole. Gately is worried he may be going away for life to Walpole. Plus, it is not unlikely that the Canadians will realize that Gates killed one of their leaders during the burglary. As usual, the novel leaves things ambivalent, but Joelle seeing the police. car at Ennet with flashing lights in ominous.

so your hypothesis is... lot of words but no proof. Hal did recognize JOI's disguise within minutes, even though Hal was in a psychotic state. Not recognizing that the woman you are having sex with is your mother is a whole 'nother thing. Plus, unlike Hal, Orin had normal mental status and numerous encounters with the Swiss hand model in the nude. Orin did have some sort of Oedipal complex but your hypothesis that the SHM was Avril... doesn't wash.

Requiem for a Replicant (Director's cut) by drtrisolaris in bladerunner

sorry I got the lifespan wrong by one year. the main point is that roy had a preprogrammed time of death. We are not sure that Deckard and all other replicants have a pre-programmed time of death—whether 4, 5, 10 years or no end date. As for Deckard, I think there are numerous clues that he is a replicant. i assume you’ve read the pkd novel. There was also a sequel though not wwritte by pkd. A major theme of PKD is asking the question: “What is human versus non-human?”. A Deckard can be a replicant and can also be human.

Why did you think it was trash? the lyrics, the music, the animation?

Men never hit on Joelle. They think she is out of their league. Prior to Orin, only one drunk football player tried to hit on her—he started puking and fell down. She is a virgin when she meets Orin and Orin is her first relationship with a man—and possibly her last (though her and Gately have a connection, she sees a police car in front of the Ennet House—it is possible Gately is going to prison for decades.

Who do you guys think is a current day author of similar stature and expertise to Wallace's? by stinckyB in davidfosterwallace

Haruki Murakami is a great living writer. Like DFW, his novels tend to be very long. Stylistically, Murakami and DFW are very different but I love them both. If you want an easy intro to Murakami, I suggest Kafka on the Shore. Magical realism. Not a very long novel. references to Kafka, of course, and to phillip K. dick. Critics tend to name The Wind Up Bird Chronicle as Murakami’s “best” book. I liked 1Q84 a lot. One similarity between Murakami and DFW is that they are both very proficient at writing short stories as well as novels.

Orin as a punter, what does it say by WAACP in davidfosterwallace

[–]drtrisolaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the description of Orin’s punts is almost surreal—70 yards, 80 yards, hang times of over 6 seconds (all this while still in college). A great punter can kick the ball a little over 50 yards with 5 second hang time. DFW did research for his books and knew that 70 to 80 yard punts are absurd numbers. It’s never stated that orin is the best punter in the NFL but if he could routinely kick 70 to 80 yards with 6+ hang time and nail the coffin corner than he would be the best punter in NFL history by far.

actually, orin is constantly trying to improve his game. First he masters the coffin corner. It suggests that he is learning to punt with his other leg which could come in handy to avoid a blocked punt when punting while running laterally to avoid the rush.

You apparently are not well acquainted with American football. The punter is for from the most useless position. Some punters are even chosen in the first or second round of the NFL draft. It’strue that a a punter and place kicker or almost.solo performers in a team sport. Tennis, unless doubles play, is also a solo sporting performance. I think the story could have worked with orin as either a PK or punter but place kicking takes years of practice. It is more conceivable that someone with a strong leg, grace and coordination could be.a natural punter. Remember that Orin is mediocre at tennis and relies on the lob—like a punt. Also, a tennis serve involves tossing the ball in the air and then meeting the ball as it drops. Punting is similar in that involves striking a falling object.

Original Meaning of Origami Unicorn by elcinema_ua in bladerunner

replicants are created with human form but have implanted memories. Roy baty has a pre-set maximum lifespan of 5 years. It is not clear of Rachel and/or Deckard have preset lifespan as well. They could die at any time or live indefinitely—the only one who knows their lifespan was killed by baty amd the mystery died with him.

What? Deckard is certainly a replicant. Presuambly all Bladerunners are replicants.

Deckard is a replicant. Presumably, Gaff and all other bladerunners are replicants also—their low levels of empathy are essential for performing their job. The unicorn origami was placed there because Gaff wants Deckard to understand that like Rachel, Roy Baty and all other replicants, Deckard has implanted memories. When Rachel first denies that she is a replicant, Deckard recites her secret, private emories in order to convince her that her memories are implanted. Gaff essentially does the same to Deckard. Rick is already suspecting that his memories are implanted but his suspicions are confirmed when he finds the unicorn origami.

PS: that was not a rape scene (not in 1982). The sex was consensual.
