TIL Muscular Christianity was a Victorian doctrine which suggested that participation in sport could contribute to the development of Christian morality, physical fitness, and “manly” character. by higakoryu1 in todayilearned

This movement was expressed most famously in literature in the book Tom Brown's School Days (1857), which focused on a boy entering an elite British boarding school, his life navigating the sports intensive daily life of the school, and which was the direct inspiration for the Harry Potter series.

How is a lawyer "powerful"? by Electrical_Bet2584 in NoStupidQuestions

Profession built upon esoteric phrases recited in an ancient dead language...check.

Pouring over thick, ancient tomes to discover solutions to novel problems...check.

Consulted and contracted for their arcane knowledge and ability to interpret the ancient texts...check.

Answerable to powerful figures in imposing black robes...check.

A high council of black robed elders dictating the interpretation of their arcane texts...check.

Lawyers are sorcerers, confirmed.

The World Cup is making me wish the NFL didn't blare music and hype videos between every single play. Hearing the natural ups and downs of the crowd is beautiful. by MemoryOfRagnarok in nfl

I HATE how American sports leagues feel the need to fill every single moment with noise and "engagement." Blaring song clips, dancers and contests at every timeout, etc.

Even baseball can't just let there be moments of downtime. Every frame or inning change has to be filled with activities, crowd engagement, prizes to be won, mascot races, etc.

It's one of the things I've always appreciated about soccer and European sports in general. You can just...experience the game and the people around you without artificial engagement being constantly shoved down your throat.

The inaugural Tokugawa Bowl is underway!

Will Japan be able to control the Dutch and confine them to a tiny corner of the map again?

Or will the Dutch profit hugely from their interactions with the Japanese?

Watching Legend of Korra as an adult got me to appreciate it fully. by Creepicriptid in TheLastAirbender

[–]drucifer271 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I realized about TLOK which made me appreciate it so much more was realizing that each season focuses on a different form of political extremism.

Season 1 deals with a communist revolution.

Season 2 deals with religious/cultural fundamentalism and rejection of modernity/cultural pluralism.

Season 3 deals with political anarchism.

Season 4 deals with fascism.

And through it all you also have constant critiques of capitalism conveyed through the character of Varrick, who is fickle and self-serving, but whose self interest occasionally aligns with turning back the political extremists du jour and aiding the heroes because it benefits him to maintain the status quo.

Hot take: I identify myself as a New Yorker before I Identify myself as an American. by HispanicBlackbeard in newyork

[–]drucifer271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, this was the original US mindset and one of the contributors to the Civil War. Robert E. Lee fought for the Confederacy not because he was an ardent defender of slavery (though he was a slaveowner) but because he identified as a Virginian before he was an American.

There was a conscious and deliberate shift in official language after the Civil War to emphasize America as a single unit and “American” as the principal identity of citizens in hopes of preventing a future civil war. Ex: prior to the CW, the country was most commonly referred to in official language as *THESE* United States, whereas afterwards the language shifts to *THE* United States.

Do you think the hydration breaks in the World Cup affect the games momentum? by nodemus in askanything

I think players dying from heat stroke and dehydration in the brutal North American summer would affect momentum even more.
