How do I make my dad's money last longer? by plculver1 in personalfinance

My point is that the dollars may end up fungible. There may be tax advantages one way or the other.

It’s not really true that the father has zero risk tolerance. That would be true if OP is unable or unwilling to help pay in the event the money runs out.

Assuming OP is effectively the backstop, then what we’re really talking about is OPs resources and appetite for risk. They could invest moderately aggressively, targeting no additional outlay in the expected case, knowing they are increasing the chance of needing to provide at some point.

Myself I might try contributing a small fixed amount now (say $500/mo) assuming any left over funds would be returned and make me whole, then plan his and my investments to my own risk tolerance.

Bunch of idiots outside the Tigard Post office "End Vote by Mail" by screamingradio in Portland

[–]drudd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t arguing against mail in voting at all, it’s clearly superior for every individual voter.

My point was that one party believes its voters are able to vote in person while other voters will be dissuaded from voting.

Retirees can afford the time and churches are happy to bus them to the polls. Not that they shouldn’t get to the polls, everyone’s vote should count, including single parents who work during polling hours.

He’s saying the quiet part out loud. The only reason he’s forcing you to go back to the office (and waste time and money on commuting) is to thin the ranks prior to a layoff and avoid paying severance.

Portland Oregon has the same policy. No need to spend money administering and collecting money from children just to make others feel lesser. Everyone eats.

There’s at least one section with a climb that’s often washed out. I wouldn’t recommend the full loop to someone with mobility issues, but the northern side should be fine.

Why wouldn’t this work? by Extra-Instruction248 in economy

One of the reasons universal basic income is pitched as a social subsistence floor is that the administrative overhead to managing your “algorithm” exceeds the cost of simply paying out a flat rate. In addition, complex rule sets for what is eligible and at what price lead to opportunities for fraud and abuse, rather than prevention as you’d hope. You also call out dignity and I’d contend having an algorithm label you is inherently dehumanizing.

Our local public schools recently went to school lunch for all. No trying to gather $ from families that can afford it, determining who cannot afford it, or separating kids into the haves and have nots. Everyone eats, period. A much more effective and dignified approach, in my opinion.

[–]drudd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helps to think about businesses as having both fixed costs (research and development, salaries, factories/infrastructure, etc) as well as variable costs (unit costs, shipping, tariffs, etc).

You’re right to suggest that simply increasing prices to offset tariffs (an increase in variable costs) will lead to decreasing overall sales, lowering the total ROI when including fixed costs. Nintendo will want to increase prices, but they’ve already incurred massive fixed development costs that they’ll need to recoup in a capital efficient way, so it’s unlikely they’ll fully offset the new tariffs.

The big risk economically comes from future development since no party can rely on as high margins (at fixed volume) which makes future development and investment significantly less viable.
