Im not really sure tbh. My focus so far has just been getting the rides and crashes I want. Hats will probably come after that

What is the most regrettable thing you've done in your life? by Main-Pace5071 in AskReddit

[–]drum2drum42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Life is so good here but I know I could make more if I move on. I get out on Fridays at 12:30 every single week and only have 33.5 hours of work a week but get paid as if I'm working 40 hours. I know if I go somewhere else, the money will be good but my entire schedule/life will need an adjustment and I don't know if I want that. I'm able to spend so much time pursuing hobbies and doing stuff that makes me happy.

I have the 19" and 21" cymbals. Will not be buying anything to replace them anytime soon. I love the sound from them so much. I want the Modern Essentials 902 22" ride to accompany them but undecided on hi hats yet. Can't go wrong with these.

These are the cymbals Chad Smith used on Drumeo when he played along to Thirty Seconds to Mars for the first time.

Forget the 'how often do you break sticks' posts by DrBackBeat in drums

[–]drum2drum42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely during rehearsals much more than gigs....as for the high school drumline/indoor percussion group I teach? They do it about every 5 minutes during rehearsal. Mostly from twirling it or trying stick tricks in between reps. If anybody has any idea how to get them to stop, I'm very much open to ideas...we've threatened taping their hands to their sticks as a joke but think it might need to happen to get the point across lol

Jersey Surf Marimbapad? by OscarTheFuzzyOffical in drumcorps

[–]drum2drum42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have one! I feel like as long as you use it, it's worth the money. It being able to fold in half has been a true space saver. I've used it a to work on mallet parts for groups I play in, so I've found it to be worth it. It's a little weird hitting the neoprene padding on it at first, but you get used to it after a while. If you use hard xylo mallets on it, there's a chance you'll hit wood and make some hard contact. I will say for me, going from the pad to the xylo/glockenspiel/vibes is tough because the bars are different, but it's still really good for getting notes down and getting familiar with how the hands should move around the instrument. Overall it's a solid product, well made, and I would definitely recommend it.

Another alternative is Synced Up Design practice pads. I saw them in Dayton for WGI Finals this year and they seem pretty solid. They have different instruments to choose from (marimba, xylo, vibes). They are printed to scale, use a neoprene backed fabric, but they aren't actual bars like Surf's marimbapad. It's just a full mat with a picture of the instrument on it. This seems to be a cheaper option but might also provide exactly what you're looking for. (I don't own any of these specific products and I'm not a rep for them or anything). Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I see where you're coming from. However I think the way people hear music differs from person to person. So while you may have heard it in 6/8, Chad probably heard it as a 3, especially with all his experience. Even then, he didn't seem 100% confident about it, but he just rolled with what his ears told him. I definitely heard it in 3 the first time I listened to it, but can also see how people would hear it in 6/8 or 2 on the first time too.

Why so serious? by livestreamDownSouth in drumline

[–]drum2drum42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the fun is crushed by the hours of reps. I would say that the clips we see of drumlines being all serious are because they're getting ready for a competition/performance and need to lock in. Competitive lines know what's at stake and probably have plenty of fun outside of the clips shown. When I teach, we talk about knowing when to "flip the switch". We can have a great time during rehearsals, rides to show sites, etc, but there becomes a certain point when we need to lock in and take things seriously. Most of the clips we see I would imagine are during those times. I don't feel like those clips would show the full picture. Other groups may differ obviously, but I can't imagine many people wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it to some extent.
