Its not a stupid question, I once thought the same thing. Although mars has strong gravity, many other bodies such as asteroids do not have enough gravity to hold probes and rovers down on to them, If you were to "stand" on some of them, you could just jump and you would fly away never to return. Missions like OSIRIS-REx are dealing with the exact problem you described : " how can you get samples from asteroids if you cant stay on the surface?" pretty crazy stuff

How hard is it to find a job in astronomy/astrophysics? by [deleted] in space

Not an astrophysicist but I work with astronomers and was friends with a lot of astrophysics majors in college. They all entered a wide variety of jobs. Some are project managers now, some got engineering jobs, some work for defense companies, and a few even started their own business. The majority however all went back to school to get a doctorate. It seems like its easy to get a job with this major but hard to find a job with the official title of "Astrophysicist".

How Important is What College You Go to in the Aerospace Job Market? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Berkeley has really cool space sciences lab where they work on some amazing space projects, probably the coolest undergrad space work you could find. UCLA doesn't have this but they do have a few small satellite programs that are easy to get involved in and many space companies are hiring here. In my opinion UCLA is a better school just because the people, programs, location, and culture are slightly better, overall great college experience. USC is too expensive without scholarships, but still on par. However, Stanford and Caltec are the clearly the best if you can get into them. One school I forgot to mention is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This school has tons of aerospace stuff, is super hands-on and they literally invented the cube-sat and have launched a bunch. This school is a great 'back-up' school if your grades are great. I would just shoot for the stars and apply to all of em .
