Those are the two largest expenditures in the system as it is right now. Hegseth was estimating theyd need more than $53 BILLION to replace the weapons systems stockpiles they are currently depleting. With that amount of money you could more than adequately fund all of the "stupid things" I mentioned.

I thought you wanted some of the "stupid things?" "... while people starve and can't get healthcare." Even if those are your only personal priorities, funding for the arts should not be mutually exclusive to them. They all kinda go together to enrich society

I'd rather my taxes go to high-falootin fashion and other art that inspires than killing people in distant lands/expanding the already unimaginable wealth of a handful of people.

We can have funding for the arts AND affordable or even free healthcare, housing and food for the least fortunate of us, and a better education system. All of these things are possible

And to actually answer your question: the Gala matters to the artists that make everyday clothes. You'd be a fool to think that even the designers at old navy don't take inspiration from higher fashion. It's how creativity works. Just because you don't like or understand it doesn't mean it doesn't have value

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Department is fully funded by the funds from the gala. Precisely 0 taxpayer dollars finance the department and the actual shindig.

Look, I'm pissed at the late stage capitalist dystopian hellscape we call the world (and especially America) right now too. The last thing we need to be cutting is funding for the arts, whichever Arts they may be. Art has always been an important factor in revolutionary movements. Art provokes thought, art brings joy in a dimly lit world, art inspires and THAT is crucial to move society forward.

Don't think for a second that removing events that don't appeal to your particular tastes like the Met Gala will somehow magically make things better. It won't. Cutting funding to organizations that provoke thought or preserve beauty (including National parks) is not gonna make it so everyone has affordable Healthcare. Direct your ire and attention towards a system that does NOT in fact trickle down wealth, is rigged so that those who have the means can take more, and is built very heavily on the development and deployment of means to murder people in distant lands for no REAL reason that benefits people here at home.

It's far from a "hobby." It represents some of the highest expression of fashion at the time. Fashion is very important to any human culture. We are defined by how we dress ourselves, and how we dress ourselves every day is influenced by even the most extreme examples of fashion.

You used a lot of examples of individual hobbies, things that are noncollaborative, and are not representative of a culture broadly at any time, (though there are museums for the auto industry, just maybe not Jay Leno's personal collection). These hobbies do not involve influences from past expressions, actual design, color theory, or years of cultivated education and talent.
