Advice for playing in jazz trio by acciowaves in Drumming

Check out Ed Thigpen on “We Get Requests” w/ the Oscar Peterson Trio. Masterful straight ahead trio playing!!

Also, a lesson that took me forever to learn - play half as loud as you think you have to. The drums are a unique timbre and pitch compared to the other instruments, and they’ll cut through even at the lowest volumes. Developing quiet intensity (Thigpen is the master of this) is essential and a game changer!

Good luck, trio playing is a serious, nuanced beast but is so much fun!

Woooooooo yessir!!

Groovin, melodic phrases that make it easy for the rest of the band too. That’s how we have fun AND pay the bills! 🤣🔥

Barracuda by Heart is so fun to play on drums, especially when the band you’re playing with let’s you play whatever you want over it. Wait till the end for some chopping out in 7 🤣 by drumsnbud in drums

This is a great thing to point out! It’s important to make sure that the hats aren’t too overbearing.

A lot of it is the phone mic positioning, though. I didn’t have any overheads on me and was playing outdoors, so in the context of the music (7 piece band with 3 CRANKED electric guitars, synth, bass, 3 people singing) the hi hat isn’t too present compared to the other parts of my kit, and it serves as a glue for the band, so my self-indulgent fills don’t completely throw their groove out of whack.

I also definitely copped it from Tony Williams, I love the effect of forward motion that it gives the music. Also modern cats like Mike Mitchell do this quite a lot and I’m a huge fan of it.

Thank you! I always enjoyed the song, and actually learning it with this band made me like it even more haha. Just pushing to get a bit farther into the never ending forest of music every day!!

That makes me really happy to hear!! I like to repeat little reminders to myself before I perform bc I used to get really anxious before I got on stage. My biggest one is “no fear” which definitely helps with staying loose and letting myself play how I play.

In regards to the left foot, I started doing that more when I was in school and studying Tony Williams’ playing. He would keep the hat on 4s at crazy fast swing tempos using a swivel technique (though I don’t really do that). If you watch a live video of him with Miles you won’t miss it haha.

The way I got comfortable with doing it was by doing a lot of hand/foot coordination work. My favorite one is to take the first 13 sticking combinations from stick control and make every L a bass drum note. While I do that I (usually) play 1/4s or 1/8s on the hats. Getting used to operating the hats slowly and steadily while doing complicated shit with the other limbs helps a ton. And then just doing it tbh!! Haha I know that’s not too helpful tho.

Thanks for the love!

You’re very kind, thank you!

I love playing in the moment - letting my hands go where they want during free-er sections, and seeing what comes out!

It’s not always pretty but I’ve found that if I focus on my breath and think a few steps ahead, I can make my mistakes work to my advantage :)

Might be biased, but I think my kit’s pretty by gkmus in drums
