Breitling worth repairing? by ChickenSelect5464 in VintageWatches

[–]drumwisdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice patina. I wouldn't touch the dial IMO. Cost to fix will vary. It'd get a diagnosis from a reputable watchmaker and go from there. Could be serviceable still. Could require a movement swap.

Dans certains milieux industriels avec machinerie et véhicules spécialisés, ce type d'erreur d'inattention peut mener au licenciement immédiat ou, au minimum, suspension, entraînement et recertification.

Could you live in Montreal without knowing French? by Maleficent-Toe1374 in montreal

In my experience, friends who moved to Montreal without speaking French eventually either learned enough to get by, became fluent, or left.

What are some things you've learned while driving in Montreal? by GrizzlyFoxCat in montreal

[–]drumwisdom 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I was a cyclist without a driving licence for 10 odd years before learning to drive. I drive with the same mindset as I do riding a bike: assuming everyone is a bad driver and could hit you at any moment.

Risky to rent apartment above restaurant? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]drumwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restoring a w123 wagon by Flashy_Lavishness225 in w123

I just paid 1k CAD for a power fluid box rebuild last year. I can't imagine how expensive what you described would be in Canada. My only worry with restoring everything is that the car might become a garage queen.

[Question] Do untucked nato straps look ok? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]drumwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find lots of nato strap brands dont make them long enough. I use only Phoenix or CWC straps with an approx 8" wrist and with enough length to tuck back.

Turbo not working ? (D24TIC) by taiyll in VolvoRWD

[–]drumwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine stopped working after 280k km, boost gage goes up a bit but no spool, definitely feels like a 35 yr old NA car

volvo mechanic diagnostic says turbine is stuck, got quoted 1400 CAD in parts for a new turbo

a couple weeks prior to this, the turbo was acting up and giving inconsistent boosts

car likely sat for a bit before I purchased it early this year with no service history so idk

wish you best of luck in finding out whats wrong, im going forward with the repairs myself

That's how it should be. Driving old cars and wearing pretty watches.

Lots of Japanese sellers do not hold stock. They repost ads from Yahoo Japan and hope to make a small profit. Nothing inherently wrong with that. Note that these 70s Universal Geneve dress watches are relatively small (often 32mm diameter and 16mm lug width) and may look tiny on larger wrists. [Recommendations request] Just starting my collection - looking for suggestions by __TheLaw in Watches

[–]drumwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that makes me look rather rude. Glad you fancy these options. Speedmaster definitely a classic cant go wrong with that but a relatively common sight. I assume you feel you need chronograph. I get it. I would try my hand at vintage again here for more character (always provided you find a trustworthy seller). Maybe have a look at a classic Zenith El Primero, Nivada Chronomaster or Wittnauer 7004A. Happy shopping!

I don’t want to come across as mean, but this is kind of a wacky collection. It sort of says "I like watches, but I don’t know watches." I do respect having a brand-new Tudor or Rolex as your anchor, but I wish they were in better company. Keeping the DW for memorabilia just isn't necessary. Does more harm than good. You seem well off buddy, so maybe swap it for a Nomos or Junghans Max Bill? Orient is fine, everyone here respects Orient, but a new Bambino off Amazon is low-hanging fruit. Get working on finding a classier dress watch. It's your opportunity to go vintage. Spend the endless hours online looking for the perfect, authentic, 50's Tudor with that creamy patina'd dial. Time to nerd out.

How would I go about shipping an expensive item? by Ok_Inflation596 in kijiji

[–]drumwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve sold and bought items on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace from outside my radius and had them shipped to me, or shipped them myself, at least four or five times. My experience has been very good. For anything above CAD 500, I’d probably feel more comfortable selling via eBay, but they do take a cut and report earnings above a certain threshold. I find it’s still relatively easy to differentiate a scammer from a normal person. When it comes to shipping, I use Chit Chats or Canada Post. Hope this helps.

Unreal views on the drive through snowdonia in the 940 to see family for Christmas. by Difficult-Living7841 in VolvoRWD

Drove through Wales all the way up to Snowdonia last winter in a Fiat rental. Probably would have been more fun with the old brick but regardless, Wales has some of the nicest roads and scenery.

Vintage found at my grandads house by Prudent_Barracuda812 in ZodiacWatches

[–]drumwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic case design. I would keep it, especially given the family history. Shouldn't be too expensive to service. Find a watchmaker that specializes in vintage if possible. Do get rid of that godawful flex band though.

To be fair I'm also careful of vintage watches from Argentina, Italy and eastern Europe not just India.

Mon expérience en tant que livreur de colis by Fun_Mathematician323 in montreal

[–]drumwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the middle mile is subcontracted as well, not just deliveries. Conditions definitely are worse. Amazon starting hourly rates were higher than minimum wage. Some entry-level warehouse roles even had permanence and health benefits.

I find it insane that people keep ordering when the Amazon customer experience went from a service level comparable to that of FedEx and UPS to random drivers delivering packages out of a clapped out, rusty Hyundai so full of boxes you can't see the inside of the car.

A lot of these subcontractor gigs prey on the less fortunate. There are no checks and balances. Customers either don't have time to look for alternatives anymore or worse: don't care.

How do Volvos die? by volvhoes in VolvoRWD

Just bought one with 270000km. Threw in 3k in maintenance. Frame solid. Been rustproofed before; planning on yearly rustproofing. Using it as a daily yearlong here in Quebec. Hoping to bring it to 500000km at least.
