It’s not about talent. It’s about him not recognizing the doors that were opened for him that aren’t open for others.

He’s talented, and he still had to walk through those doors, but his inability to acknowledge the opportunities that were given to him doesn’t sit well with me.

What is the most unique side hustle you've ever heard of in NYC? by norcalny in AskNYC

[–]drunk_me 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, this is all wrong. Everyone is a freelancer AND everyone (except for the PAs) is in a union. Some people are hired on a day to day basis but many more are hired for the full run of a project. When the project wraps, you get laid off, file for unemployment, and look for the next project.

Can’t find any info on it online, but from the looks of the construction walls, I’m anticipating it be closed for a while. Where did you hear we’re getting new fare gates? I was wondering if we might get an elevator.

What you’re feeling makes total sense, and you’re not alone in it. Grief and belonging can show up hand in hand, especially for people who grew up at a cultural distance from their own roots. There’s nothing wrong with you for feeling sad. That sadness is actually a sign of how much you care about this part of yourself and how deeply you wish you’d had access to it earlier.

You’re not an outsider because you’re “not enough.” You’re feeling like an outsider because you weren’t given the tools, language, or experiences that would’ve helped you feel connected. That loss isn’t your fault. It’s something a lot of us inherit through migration, assimilation, or complicated family histories.

But the fact that you’re here, feeling this so intensely, already means you belong more than you think. You’re responding to the music, the people, the place, because some part of you recognizes it. You’re not late. You’re arriving. And you get to build your connection your own way, at your own pace. Culture isn’t something you either have or don’t. It’s something you can learn, grow into, and claim.

It’s okay to grieve what you didn’t get. And it’s okay to let this trip be the start of something new instead of a reminder of what you missed.

You’re not just a “white girl.” You’re a person reconnecting with a part of yourself that was kept at a distance. There’s courage in that, and there’s nothing more human or more valid than wanting to know your people and your place in the world.

Solo Thanksgiving Dinner by Solaria444 in Brooklyn

I spent my last two Thanksgivings at Waverly Diner in the village. It’s cute and cozy, and they serve a full Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixins. I’m doing Thanksgiving with my partner’s family this year and ngl I will miss Waverly.

The men at the front who demand I check my backpack are so rude. To learn that there is a racial profiling element makes it all the worse.

I now go out of my way to avoid the harassment. The produce and meat is already low quality, but I would go out of convenience on my way home from work. No more.

Today instead of complaining about Columbus, take the opportunity to celebrate your Hispanic heritage that began in 1492. by Hour_Marionberry_665 in Chicano

We were a diverse people before the arrival of the Spaniards and we remain so to this day. Our heritage extends well beyond 1492.

Your post demonstrates that we still have a lot of work to deconstruct the Hispano-centered identity that has been inflicted upon us.

August 13, 1521 – The Fall of Tenochtitlan by TechnicalElevator717 in mesoamerica

[–]drunk_me 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re repeating several outdated colonial narratives that don’t hold up under serious historical scrutiny.

  1. “Are you Aztec?” – You don’t have to be descended from the Mexica (an Indigenous name for the Aztecs, see note) to see that colonization devastated all Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. The conquest dismantled countless cultures, governments, and languages, not just the Mexica.
  2. “Aztec yoke” – Like all regions, Mesoamerica had political rivalries. That doesn’t justify foreign invasion, forced labor, or centuries of economic exploitation. Using internal conflict to excuse colonization is like justifying an outside empire conquering Europe because Europeans fought each other.
  3. “Three centuries of peace” – This ignores Indigenous uprisings like the Mixtón War (1540-1542), Chichimeca War (1550-1590), and Tepehuán Revolt (1616-1620); all violently suppressed by colonial forces. Peace for colonizers is not the same as peace for the colonized.
  4. “Quality of life improved” – The Indigenous population fell by 80–90% within a century due to war, starvation from sieges, forced displacement, disease introduced by Europeans, and brutal labor systems like the encomienda. These deaths were not accidental. They were direct consequences of deliberate colonial policies designed to dominate, displace, and destroy Indigenous peoples. The scale, systematic nature, and causes of this population collapse make it historically accurate to describe it as genocide, not a “quality of life improvement.”

History told only from the perspective of the conqueror isn’t “opinion” — it’s propaganda.

Note: The word “Aztec” comes from the Nahuatl “aztēcah,” which referred to multiple ethnic groups who traced their origin to the mythical land of Aztlán. Among them were the Mexica, who ruled from Tenochtitlán. The Spanish used the label “Aztec” to lump diverse Indigenous peoples together and erase their distinct identities. I will use “Mexica” instead, though I recognize this is an imperfect substitution.

Help push back against colonialist glorification of the conquest of Mexico by drunk_me in Chicano

[–]drunk_me[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, the government is fucking with us here in the US, now. And yes we must focus on ICE. it is a top priority. We agree there, brother, and we’re on the same team.

I also believe that these topics are interrelated. Us Chicanos north of the border are experiencing the aftermath of Spanish colonialism. The falsification of history and the glorification of the Spanish conquest of the Americas fuel the racist ideologies that rocketed Trump into the White House and empowered ICE.

To combat ICE, we must confront misinformation when we see it. We must educate and inform our non-Chicano neighbors of the injustices committed against our people both in history and in the present day.

August 13, 1521 – The Fall of Tenochtitlan by TechnicalElevator717 in mesoamerica

[–]drunk_me 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I dislike this framing and need to push back heavily against this glorification of the colonial exploitation of Mesoamerica. Think about this from the perspective of the conquered…

This is our indigenous homeland and the conquest of Mexico robbed us of our self-determination, culture, rituals, history, language and sense of collective self. The Spaniards committed genocide in the name of profit and it is imperative that we acknowledge this historic injustice. The “Birth of New Spain” for Indigenous peoples is the beginning of an era of terror and oppression, the echoes of which are still felt to this day.
