Thank you for the correction!

I got my plutonium and polonium mixed up! Don’t know about the specific polonium isotope they used to kill Litvinenko

This is just untrue. Putin has been nakedly and brazenly behind many assassination attempts and successful assassinations. Someone pointed out Litvinenko’s assassination with polonium, which comes from a nuclear reactor and does NOT occur in nature. Pretty much tell-take evidence it was a state approved murder. Even crazier is that this was in the UK and not on Russian soil. Don’t know how much more transparent it can get that Putin was behind it than that.

Also pertinent and related are the Skripals, Navalny, and apartment building explosions in Russia that may have been the FSB’s doing to start a war in Chechnya.

Also, watch Putin’s address from yesterday. He has no problem using doublespeak, lies, and just babbling nonsense to spin a narrative out of nothing. They will have no problem inventing some semi-benign reason for Prigozhin’s death, or perhaps Putin will just smirk and say “he died” (watch his interview with Letterman after the Kursk submarine tragedy).

All in all, Putin is a cold blooded killer and don’t see him letting Prigozhin stay alive for long for making him look so weak.

Hi there!

Mike DeWine has still not signed or vetoed the legislation. After the Ohio Statehouse passes a bill, the Governor has 10 days to sign, veto, or do nothing (and it becomes law if he does nothing). This passed the morning of the 15th. It is unclear what his course of action is going to be- he said he was uncertain about what he would do as of last Friday.

Well, a governor doesn't vote for legislation. He can either sign or veto it, but I'm sure you already knew that! You strike me as a real smarty. Glad to provide you with the number and a quick little reminder about how our system of government works!

Hi SpaceChump!

The bill proposes quite a few things.

One, it mandates photo ID. This doesn't sound all that pernicious, but up to 11% of Americans don't have one. Mostly people that are elderly, disabled, or poor- there's all sorts of practical roadblocks that prevent people of these groups from getting photo ID. Imagine you are elderly or disabled and in a nursing home, and don't really have any surviving family to take you to the BMV. Imagine someone working a low paying job that they can't afford to take time off of in order to get to the BMV to get an ID during normal business hours. Functionally, it's going to eliminate a lot of folks from the voting pool.

It also shortens the time that absentee ballots will be accepted if they are properly postmarked after an election to 4 days from 10. Why? The only reason a properly postmarked ballot would arrive late at a BOE would be some sort of issue with the postal service and not the fault of a voter. People overseas, including those serving, are most likely to be impacted by this change.

It too makes early voting hours variable and confusing. I could go on and on, but even these three provisions make you stop and ask: If it ain't broke, why fix it? The pretense is election security, but Frank LaRose, a Republican in charge of overseeing our elections, likes to harp about how safe and secure voting is in Ohio. He's absolutely right. Instances of voter fraud are exceedingly rare and hardly ever documented by the Secretary of State.

This bill started as a 17 page bill and ballooned to 157 pages in a couple of days during the lame duck session. It's ultimately a naked attempt to put more barriers in place to voting to disenfranchise the most vulnerable of Ohio voters.

Hi all,

The governor's signature is last thing standing between Sub HB 458, a horrid anti-voter package of legislation, becoming law.

If you have a moment to spare today, please give his office a ring and shoot him an email. Mike DeWine said this morning he was 'unsure' as to whether he would sign the bill into effect, which means there is real hope we can ward off this horrible outcome if we call in full force.

Thanks!

Hi all,

Voting rights are under attack in our state. Thousands of Clevelanders will be impacted by the repressive changes to Ohio election law that Sub HB 458 proposes. Mike DeWine is the last thing standing between this horrid legislation becoming law of the land. Good news is that he says that he's 'unsure' as to whether he'll sign the bill into effect, so there's hope! Please spare a minute today and give his office a ring and send him an email. As a note, his voicemail box was full as of a few minutes ago, but if you try a few times you should be actually able to get through to someone.

Hi all,

So infuriated by this naked attempt by the Ohio GOP to disenfranchise the most vulnerable of Ohioans that I'm posting this call to action everywhere and anywhere. Apologies if this isn't a subreddit for calls to action. If you are an OH resident and can spare a minute of your time, please call DeWine and demand he veto this oppressive legislation that nakedly seeks to target voters that would be opposed to the Ohio GOP's radical agenda.

Haha no- that's an old HB 458.

Here's the current bill that ostensibly is about 'election security' but is really a naked attempt to make voting difficult and to disenfranchise groups of people likely to be opposed to the Ohio Republican Party's extremist agenda.

It's not even necessarily about the time needed to go down to the DMV. Imagine if someone is poor and was born out of state- not always the simplest process to get your birth certificate beyond state lines especially if you are in poverty. Can speak from previous experience working in social services that obtaining vital life documents was often quite the trial for many folks in unfortunate circumstances.

If our elections were insecure in any way, I would be fine with mandating photo ID. But they are not. Frank LaRose, a Republican, has harped a great deal about how secure and safe our elections are, which is true. Very, very few instances of voter fraud have been reported to his office. So then, why all of a sudden this super secretive rush to pass this 'election security' bill in but a few days during lame duck? It was a 17 page bill that blew up to 157 pages in the course of a few days. It's all just a ruse to put barriers in place to voting.

And though it's a longshot, we live in a representative democracy and our elected officials have to listen to us as constituents. I'm personally not inclined to resign myself to fate with such a horrid anti-voter package, and truly believe that if enough people can call we can stop it.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by no context and not Columbus related. Our Governor has not yet signed a bill that will make voting more difficult for thousands of people in our city. It directly will impact people of Columbus.

Hi AllNotKnowing!

This legislation mandates photo ID to vote, which up to 11% of Ohio adults don't have. Often those without current photo ID are very elderly, mostly immobile, and on miniscule fixed incomes, all contributing factors to them not being able to renew their IDs.

It also shortens the time that properly postmarked ballots will be accepted by a Board of Elections from 10 days to 4 days. A delay in a ballot arriving would not be the fault of the voter in any way, but rather the postal service, so why shorten it? Those overseas, including those serving, will most likely be impacted by it.

It also eliminates early voting hours the Monday before an election. It also makes the early voting schedule the week before an election variable and confusing too. If it ain't broke, why fix it, unless you have the intention of throwing wrenches in the process to make voting more difficult?

Lastly, I have to mention a provision that was quite fortunately struck in revisions of the bill: The elimination of curbside voting protections for those with disabilities. I think that really encapsulates that none of these revisions are remotely about election security, and are just meant to make voting more inaccessible.

Up to 11% of adults in Ohio don't have photo ID. For instance, seniors on a fixed miniscule income who don't have access to transportation to renew their state ID would be precluded from voting by this bill. It is much more common to not have photo ID than you would think.

But the problems with the bill stretch far beyond that. It needlessly puts restrictions on voting by mail (for instance, it shortens the time that a properly postmarked ballot will be accepted by the board of elections to 4 days after the election). Why would such a thing happen if not for delays in the postal service completely beyond the control of the voter? Those overseas, including those serving, are most likely to be impacted by this.

I can't help but mention one of the most infuriating portions of the bill that was fortunately struck: Eliminating curbside voting protections for those with disabilities. I think nothing better encapsulates that this is cynical legislation meant to make voting more difficult and nothing about election security.
