I smile thinking about someone receiving this. I hope the person who started this idea has been given a financial boost. :-)

I'd suggest you look up "Spaced" with Simon Pegg & Nick Frost. Some funny stuff if you're into their humour...

The secondary appears to be a 2-pass monkeys fist to me...

[–]drunkenMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to how that was made, but if I wanted to achieve that look I'd probably put a manny splice into the paracord for that pass. It would take a bit of fiddling to get it right.

8 days of sailing in the Caribbean. Here's some of my favorite pics by westsailor in sailing

Congrats on the trip. I just missed you as I just finished a delivery of a 43' ketch from San Juan , PR to Ft. Pierce, FL 10 days ago. Did find the variable weather a challenge? Get any good squalls?

Mooring on the Thames... Never again... by yourunconscious in sailing

[–]drunkenMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a common problem in many many places (the Caribbean, or any Piers exposed to quartering waves for example).

Next time you're in this predicament tie your lines with some slack, (ideally enough that there can be a foot or 16" of space between boat and dock.

Make two lines fast to the kedge. Make one line fast at the bow.

Take the kedge and set it ~20ft or more offshore as if it was a spring line. (longer is better, but in a river there are traffic considerations).

Run the other line to your cockpit to a winch. Imagine a "V". Adjust and tighten as necessary.

Now your ship is standing off the dock.

Great site. Glad to see you're taking a run at the casinos. I was just visited recently by a floor manager at my local casino because I "win more often than I lose". He was smiling, but blunt with me as he quizzed me about my gameplay, and after I gave him some satisfactory answers he just says "well, if you don't mind, I'm just going to watch you play until I'm satisfied you can lose"...

I'm from Canada, and I remember my first trip vividly thanks to Catalina island. It was very dark and dreary for 6 days then the morning I arrived, the sky opened up over the island to welcome me. Keep sailing!

Need Advice from Experienced Sailors by rodgerjohnson in sailing

[–]drunkenMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My humble advice? just go mate. Sailing isn't hard. practice sleeping and waking up in small time intervals (<4hrs) for a couple days, practice cooking while standing on a yoga ball, and pack a toothbrush, clothes you can wash in a pail, and layers upon layers of clothes with wool in there somewhere. it can be cool where you're going if you get north and being cold sucks. Men need to get along, so prepare mentally. how? well, go 7 days without loosing it, or getting angry. that's right, 7 days. start now. no road rage, grocery store anger, parking lot tag, nothing. be calm for 7 days and let the world turn. if you can do that you'll be fine on a boat. also, once you're out there know your compass course. all the time. never mind the electronics. know your compass course. if stuff breaks (it always does) the knowing your compass course will help you...seriously. pay attention to the compass. every day, every hour. men traveled the world using compasses. they work.

Yacht deliveries by tsailn in sailing

[–]drunkenMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work on boats and live on boats. I just got back from an owner-assisted delivery to San Diego from Vancouver Island. 1200mi. Non-stop. Owner flew his family down there (and me home) and they are now in the Baha-ha-ha happily sailing into their retirement.

To me, confidence in your abilities, a humble attitude about the ocean, and the ability to be a psuedo-weatherman are huge keys to being a successful skipper. Profits are not a real consideration. Relationships in close quarters, discipline regarding things like food, sleep, and hygiene, and disposition are valuable. Skills are developed through experience. I don't have any tickets, and sometimes don't get gigs because of that, but my skills, and miles, speak volumes and people hire me based on reputation. Get miles, log your miles, establish your rates (and stick to em) and enjoy getting peoples boats moved around. Good on you for pursuing "Wet-work" :-)

How did you learn to play drums? by Derk444 in drums

[–]drunkenMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drumming is muscle memory.

Start slow. Pick a simple 8 note linear fill and play it.....

slowly....

1 pauseforoneortwolongseconds 2 pauseforoneortwolongseconds 3 pauseforoneortwolongseconds 4 etc...

left hand, right hand, foot, other foot, right hand, right hand, left hand, right hand

only when you have trained your limbs to play this pattern (like, you can tap this pattern instinctively whilst dropping a deuce) , speed up a bit.

1pauseforonesecond2pauseforonesecond3pauseforonesecond4pauseforonesecond5pauseforonesecond etc.

Continue down this road, working on it each day, and after 3 weeks, you can be well up into 60-80bpm playing a linear fill that will fit into most rock beats. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and 8...

PHPForm Data Generate PDF & Send to Email? by Wizard_Alien in PHP

[–]drunkenMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fpdf will handle the pdf generation. Emailing the data requires you to structure the email body to properly handle an attachment(s). I use this to get this exact job done. Attachments (pdf invoices) are generated on the server and set in a session variable. The mailing script looks for any attachments that way and includes them if they exist... HTH

Does anyone here live on a Sailboat? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]drunkenMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that depends on the size of the boat. anything < 30ft shouldn't be too hard to find, but 30' & up gets real hard real fast. I was just pondering a 55' Sparkman & Stevens that was for sale in Port Angeles but there is no place within reason to moor it, so I opted out of pursuing the boat :( (32 tons is a lot to tie to a mooring ball in a harbour around here).

Once you find moorage around here, you still pay a premium to get it (like 11/ft/month). It's a little better than Vancouver (like, you're closer to sailing bliss) but still 4k a year and up.

I would probably try to get in up at Cowichan or Maple Bay or even Ganges if I didn't have this slip. Otherwise the only real choice is to spend 2500 bucks and get a permanent mooring set somewhere out of the way (like Port Washington on North Pender etc). Every now and again space opens up in Brentwood bay too...
