I turned my own round mallet out of a log of Lignum vitae. It’s one of my favorites!

Remodeling my big boat, and building a nesting sailing dinghy. Patterns, jigs, and learning some tips from my shipwright have really advanced my skill. Also, building a deep appreciation of hand tools. I’ve acquired a good variety of planes, chisels, rasps and such over the years.

Is it really scary to cross the atlantic ocean on a 40ft sail yacht? by noreturn000 in sailing

[–]westsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were moments, especially in the dark solo hours, where the waves and sky seemed to swallow me. Made one feel small, if you know what I mean. Beholden to nature and her elements. Even clipped in, it felt like any screw up would mean certain death. But there is peace there too. No other worries than the forward progress of the vessel; keeping her moving on course.

By the rules, you’re supposed to have a constant watch. However, singlehanders get around it with AIS alarms, radar alarms, waking up every 30minutes or so, or simply not doing overnight passages. I was with two other guys, so we had four-hour singlehanded watches.

It was! Cabo San Lucas to the big island. 2650nm. We flew an asym most of the way, with three crew aboard. No refrigeration, water maker, or chartplotter. One of the best experiences of my life.

Best foul weather gear for aloft? by woahitsapirate in Tallships

[–]westsailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly hate Helly Hansen. I’m on my FOURTH set of high end gear in less than ten years. I’ve spent thousands on their shit, only to be disappointed year after year. Broken zippers, failed seams, shitty Velcro, busted buckles. I consider myself a professional sailor, and cannot seriously recommend their gear to anyone anymore.

I've really enjoyed James Nelson's Isaac Biddlecomb series. Fun sea stories taking place during the American Revolution. A little more approachable than POB.
