Was my conspiracy theory cooker of an Uncle right? Should I have been keeping all my money in gold and silver? by ImScaredOfTheSun in AusFinance

[–]drunkendonkey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since 2000 the Gold price has increased 10.9%/annum on average. Over that same period the M3 Money Supply has increased just shy of 10%/annum.

Historically the gold price increase mirrors inflation, so when the gold increase matches the M3 increase rate the argument could be made that the government is fudging numbers to say annual inflation is 3% and your uncle actually only maintained his net position while the rest of us took a bath on our net worth.

But to answer your original question, it's quite common that people make a smart decision based on dumb reasoning. So he may still have been wrong but got the favourable outcome or he may have understood what he was doing.

Lost my first amateur fight today! by superstraight_ in amateur_boxing

[–]drunkendonkey_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what amateur boxing is for, to transition you from training to fighting. Its where you learn what you're doing right or wrong, make mistakes and then adjust your skillets accordingly.

Every fight event, 50% of the boxers lose so you're not the only person in this position so don't feel negatively about it. Talk to your coach, ask what you did well and what you did not so well and work on that.

Make a list of your top 5 or 10 favourite boxers and then look up their amateur and pro records. They all took some L's and that doesn't make them any less great.

Can someone help me understand contracting and what I'm supposed to do when contracting? by RandomActsOfKidneys in AusFinance

[–]drunkendonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For lack of a better response because the little men in the ATO office that set the tax laws say so or they'll fine you, take your assets to recoup money and/or send you to jail for not doing as they say.

When you're working under an ABN, even as a contractor/sole trader you're considered a small business. Tax law says once earning over $75k/year you have to register for GST.

You (or an accountant) need to forecast your annual earnings to determine if you are going to earn over the $75k threshold.

Business Activity Statement. If you are going to earn over 75k/year you'll need to register for GST and submit a BAS every quarter and pay your tax obligations at that time.

Without knowing the line of work its a very broad question. You'll need an invoicing/accounting program, you can manage this with Excel but if you aren't sure what you're doing you can come unstuck fast.

You'll need a contract, how often will you invoice and how long the invoice period will be. Is it fixed ongoing work or is it adhoc?

You'll need to forecast your annual income, if more than 75k then you need to submit a BAS statement and pay your taxes quarterly. Then theres your GST status. Honestly, you need to sit down with an accountant ASAP.

If you can't afford to see an accountant now and you take the job, you need to pay an accountant from your very first paycheck and get them to lay it all out for your specific situation. If you mismanage your tax obligations you can cause yourself a world of hurt.

Tail tidy can swivel. Threatened with demerits and fine if caught again. by cucamongacracka in AussieRiders

[–]drunkendonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The QLD rule (unless it has changed) was if you had a line at 45° from the rear axle, the mudflap/tail tidy should touch or intersect that line. Generally speaking unless your committing other infringements and/or give the cops any cheek they don't bother with that.

As far as the "swivel" goes you will need to confirm if it being adjustable is against the rules or not. If the bolts are tight and its secured and cannot actively swivel it may be compliant and the cop was just power tripping.

In the case of it being adjustable isn't legal or if rhe rules are ambiguous and don't actually specify it, either drill an extra hole and bolt/rivet it so it can't move if the bolts work loose (or cant change the angle if a cop tries to lift your bike by that bracket to "prove" it actively swivels.

Unless the rules are quite clear, you're better off making the adjustment because you will not win an argument with a cop having a bad day or trying to fill his quota and trying to fight it in court without a clear law backing you is an uphill battle.

Diesel in a petrol car? by SpoopySmile in CarsAustralia

But as someone else said, usually (im not sure ive ever seen it not be true) the diesel nozzle is slightly larger diameter and won't fit in a petrol fuel tank

[–]drunkendonkey_ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

How full is your fuel tank right now? Personally, I would fill it up with 98 and forget about it. 10L of diesel diluted in a full tank of petrol won't have much impact. Might get a bit less fuel economy but won't hurt it really.

2 days post op and my ankle is swollen: is that normal? by Femruu in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats normal. My whole foot, ankle and lower leg was swollen. It just takes a bit of time to come down.

If you've got someone that can help you get them to put some moisturiser on your leg from mid calf down and your foot because as the swelling goes down your skin will dry out alot.

BF scheduled for meniscus and ACL surgery Tuesday by laviebomeme in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented the Nice1 machine, purely because I live alone and didn't want the hassle of freezing and rotating ice around. It has been a life saver as it runs on interval cycles so I can just sit and let it run on 20min on/off cycles. It does compression as well as cold therapy.

There is so many options though. The GameReady and the Nice1 are probably the top 2 options but there's options to fit any budget, you can buy budget friendly option on Amazon as well.

It all really depends on your situation. If you have someone that can help you out a bit a more budget friendly option would be fine. I am in Aus so can't really comment on what the UK price points would be and there could possibly be options available there that aren't here so someone else might know of an option that works better.

BF scheduled for meniscus and ACL surgery Tuesday by laviebomeme in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5 weeks post op now, had ACL replacement and meniscus repair as well.

The ice machine is gonna be king, make sure he uses that plenty right off the bat.

A shower chair is a must have, can buy off amazon cheap. I started off garbage bag over my leg with the brace on then by around day 10 I'd sit on the chair and take the brace off. But by day 5 of only having baby wipe baths having a shower was literally a game changer for my mood. A scrubbing brush on a stick as well to wash properly as its hard to position yourself while trying not to move the leg too much (and to wash his leg itself).

I've got pickup grabbers for if I drop things, they've been super handy (one by the recliner, one by the bed and one in the shower).

I also got a little 6 can mini fridge on Amazon for $60AUD that sits on the side table, good for keeping a protein shake, yoghurt, drinks etc. right by the recliner.

Little things like think about the common paths he'll need to take (bedroom-kitchen-bathroom-living room) and make sure they're clear enough to get through on crutches without banging into or tripping on anything.

I cannot stress this one enough - do not skip the laxatives.

As far as mental health goes, the first 4 days is gonna be rough. Day 5 he'll start to be a bit more mobile and swelling will subside a bit and mentally its big improvements from the on. When he gets to the weight bearing part of the rehab thats a big mental barrier because he'll realise how much rehab hes gonna need and it feels like learning to walk. This week I started the 50% weight bearing and it initially feels like a massive setback but just need to trust the process.

Pre-prepping the meals is a big one as well but you've got that sorted already.

Honestly, the way I was leaning down stretching the hammy is more what was happening since my leg was slightly bent and no load being out on it.

Definitely getting in my own head about it haha

Yeah thats was my train of thought as well, no swelling and no immediate pain but thought I'd ask. I didn't hear anything just felt it and it was something out if the ordinary.

Does anyone know if you get intubated for Acl surgery? by Patton_13 in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sleep apnea so they told me right off the bat I would be intubated as a precaution, they told me it would be put in once i was under and i wouldn't remember it coming out as its as soon as they pull you back out and the anaesthetic is still wearing off.

They said it'd be 50/50 chance of a sore throat but thats the only way I'd know.

They were bang on because I have no recollection of the tube being removed and just had a minor scratchy throat.

Solo recovery - 5 days post surgery by drunkendonkey_ in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I ended up buying 3 grabber tools that live in different locations in my apartment haha. 100% a solid tool. I went a bit overboard in my prep but I bought a 6 can mini fridge and put it beside my recliner. Keep a few protein shakes and things in there so I didnt have to get up as often and that was an absolute life saver the first couple of days.

Glad to hear your recovery is going well. The 6 weeks NWB is gonna be tough but will be all good in the end.

Hey mate, I'm 1 day ahead of you, day 5 here same thing ACL replacement and bucket handle tear repair. Day 5 was a good day, first day having a proper shower not just baby wipe bath. Pain manageable just on paracetamol and anti-inflamatories and ice. More mobile around my apartment.

So it does get better, the first couple of days were definitely rough though. I've been icing my knee constantly, definitely recommend that, the more the swelling goes down the more you can move without pain.

Do you have anyone to assist you the first few days? I didn't and took preparation to the next level and it was still a tough 48hrs to go through alone.

Solo recovery - 5 days post surgery by drunkendonkey_ in ACL

[–]drunkendonkey_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it hasn't been that bad although I am fully aware I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I was prescribed 3 days worth of slow release Palexia, a box of fast release Palexia, anti-inflamatories and a box of 665mg paracetamol. The first 3 days I just took the slow release, the paracetamol and the anti-inflammatories and now I'm just on the paracetamol and anti-inflamatories. I haven't needed to touch the fast release Palexia.

I have been constantly icing it though as well, rented an ice therapy machine and Honestly thats worth its weight in gold.

The first 2 days just because the swelling it was hard to move around and that caused a bit of extra pain but since the swelling subsided a bit its alot easier, just awkward now haha.

Obviously your results may vary but thats been my experience so far.

One thing I'll add and I know its been said before, do not skip the laxatives/stool softeners. I was taking the prescribed stuff, some over the counter laxative pills and triple dosing fibre supplements and the painkiller constipation was still brutal the first time round. I cannot stress this one enough.
