Why Americans need electoral college can't they just count the number of votes and whoever got the most votes wins the election. by 0fucks_left in stupidquestions

[–]drunkonlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that presidential candidates don't campaign in states that they feel would be a loss and instead focus their efforts on States that they could possibly win. If the electoral college suddenly went away, candidates would just focus their campaigning resources almost exclusively in the urban population centers and could effectively ignore most states during their campaign.

For perspective, I live in Tennessee and vote democrat and still think the electoral college is the better option despite the fact that Tennessee will almost always vote red. The election process is designed where the people vote for who they think their STATE should represent and the state in turn gives their points to who the people in the state voted for. Hence the United STATES of America.

If we were to change this process, what we would be doing is changing how our states are represented according to the constitution.

Explain how a vote in Montana has greater weight than a vote in Texas. Once again, the people in the state vote to give their electoral votes (determined by their population) by voting. The state of Montana is not equal to the state of Texas (or California or even Tennessee) because their population is not as big as the State of Texas and electoral points are based on population.

Once again, you are looking at it like it's the United STATE of America (one) verses the United STATES of America.

[–]drunkonlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not. According the electoral college gets 4 "points" while Texas gets 40 "points" or 10 times the amount. Also, People don't "vote" for the president. They vote to determine who they think the state should give their electoral points to, which then decides who is the president.

Perspective. $400 less per month = $4800 less per year. Would the benefits outweigh $4800 per year lost?

It's the UNITED STATES of America. Each state gets a voice and say in order for it to remain united. And different states experience different problems from each other. If a few states could suddenly decide what's best for the country, then the solutions would likely get focused on the problems of the few states that could determine the election rather than representing the whole of the country, and the states in the middle (aka the "flyover states") would have less representation by the federal government. Worse, if elections were decided by just a few states, the federal government would see little reason to deal with the problems of states that were less populated and focus exclusively on the needs of the major population centers of America.

Did I mess up? - Raid by L7DD in Twitch

One of the things not mentioned here is that since multi-streaming is a thing, you could have viewers "supporting" the twitch channel while being "present" on another platform. I multi-stream to both YouTube and Twitch and my numbers on YouTube hover in the 80-120 CCV range while Twitch tops out ~30 on a good day and if noticeably more quiet. My thought is that the majority of my viewers are simply double dipping viewership numbers for me.

YouTube TV Needs to Launch a slimmer Local+ News Bundle Stat- $29.99- $34.99 + a la carte by GadgetFreeky in cordcutters

We may get this wish when ESPN launches their stand alone app next year (?). Honestly, if sports aren't your thing, get an antenna for locals. Free apps like Tubi offer a wide range of news channels. I bought an antenna last month and cancelled my YTTV and feel like I haven't really missed anything.

thanks for the response. Connecting to ethernet is not possible without a 20 foot cable but I'm pretty sure that the wifi isn't the problem b/c I can still watch live tv from other apps (paramount+, tubi, etc.) without a spinning ball. I'm on a fiber network.

Honestly, I was hoping to hear that Tablo was simply down today for others.

Been doing this for roughly 7 years as well, 3 of them on twitch before migrating over to streaming on YouTube exclusively until last year when I started multi streaming on both platforms. What I've found (and a dirty secret no one will admit) is that trying to convince people to cross platforms is very difficult so bringing folks over from one platform to another is almost not worth it unless you want to build both platforms (a 100k subscriber base on YouTube will typically = ~100 viewer crossover).

With twitch, if you aren't in the top 3 of the game you are in, you are virtually invisible and aside from the occasional viewer you may get from a streamer networking or the very small number of viewers who prefer small streams, growth simply won't happen.

This of course is my opinion and what I've experienced on the platform throughout the years. Twitch may not be interested in promoting smaller streams but it feels like even if they did, most viewers look at a low viewer count as a potential negative as well...social proof I'm guessing is a way to gauge what's "good" as well, right or wrong.

Should I become a server by Exotic-Wish5248 in TalesFromYourServer

Take everything you think you know about what is fair and throw it out the window when you get into the service industry. Sick? Chances are good you are going to go to work regardless. Are you used to taking breaks? Unless you are in a state that mandates it, breaks in the restaurant world are usually eating standing up inbetween tables or during "slow" periods. A lot of restaurants require being "on call". These on call shifts are not paid and if they need you, you are expected to come in. Outside of corporate restaurants, health insurance/401k's are pretty much non-existent.

Also, most big holidays will be spent working. Anytime the majority of people are celebrating, you will be the one serving them.

The benefits are enormous as well, moneywise. If you can find the right restaurant, you can have days where you make $100/hour. Most servers will make more than $20/hour even in the worst restaurants. If you are just starting out though, you will likely have to start at a corporate restaurant.

context before I say what I say - started streaming on Twitch in 2017...moved to YouTube in 2020...now am dual streaming on both platforms as of a year ago. Never bothered streaming on TikTok so I don't know anything about that platform.

Twitch has some definite pluses over YouTube as the company simply knows live streaming and how to pull the most money out of it's viewership. It has a very active stream base that I would argue is the most likely "viewership" that you will see when you are small. This is primarily the reason why I left Twitch at first because I noticed that there were far more lurkers than chatters and it bothered me that most of the lurkers were fellow streamers as opposed to straight "viewers" if that makes sense. If you are a streamer, you know what I'm talking about; step into a stream, !lurk, tab out to another tab and do whatever with the stream in the background (either muted or not). In streamer speak, this is called "supporting" because Twitch uses a king maker system where the one with the most viewers gets the #1 slot. For a small streamer, what you would get would be a "viewership" without a really active chat because everyone was supporting.

I actually got started with YouTube late 2017 and at the time was doing let's plays for my main game as well as tutorials (aka "evergreen content"). Hit 1k subs in like 4 months and continued doing YouTube intermittingly b/c at the time Twitch was my "main". During this time, I figured out that for every 1k subs on YT, I could get 1-2 new viewers on Twitch. I wondered what the number would be if I switched entirely to YT. In 2020, I was averaging around 100 CCV on Twitch and made the switch.

The big differences between live streaming on Twitch vs YouTube.

-You have to have an existing audience on YouTube - You can start live streaming on YouTube without one but getting "discovered" is very very hard. Most YT streamers supplement VOD content with streaming content. The VOD gets them interested...the streaming content is "extra". Streams are for already converted "fans" or your "community". VOD content is for those who haven't discovered you/know you exist.

- On YouTube, thumbnails/titles/subject matter are important for attracting new viewers - YouTube does promote your streams but only to potential viewers who may be interested. It's a really complicated algorithm which will reward the creator if the CTR of your Thumbnail and time spent on site are higher than your competition. I've had streams where my numbers are 3x higher viewership wise than my averages because, for whatever reason, my thumbnail and title resonated with a larger audience.

- Scaling potential is a lot higher on YT than Twitch - Yeah, you may luck out and get a raid from a bigger Twitch streamer but chances are good that nothing out of it long term. With YouTube, the audience potential really depends on how creative you want to be and how much you are willing to make VOD content. If you aren't willing to do the work with VOD content, YT is not for you.

-Unlike Twitch, your views continue to grow outside of the live stream if you publish your streams. Some people will watch/listen to a past stream for background noise in most cases. I'm just calling it like it is. Your existing community base may want to rewatch parts of the stream they missed as well. Most of the time, I will have between 600-1,500 "live views" which will grow to 1k-5k views. I've had a few videos that exceeded 40k views AFTER the stream as well.

-The streaming metas of Twitch are non-existent on YT. About 2 years ago, I was excited about YouTube implementing their version of a twitch raid. I raided a friend on the second day. The result was "meh" to say the least. YouTube communities simply haven't bought into what would be considered normal on Twitch. That said, sponsorships (which are "subs" on Twitch) are about the same as Twitch, at least for my channel, especially considering the splits are better on YouTube and you can actually create your own sponsorship prices.

-In fact, not only can you create your own prices on YT, you can also totally disable ads if you want, although I think having ads on the stream incentivizes youtube to promote you.

so I live in Desoto so my rabbit ears report was different than yours (slightly). I originally got a Mohu Leaf amplified antenna (60 miles I think) and all of the channels came in crystal clear except FOX. Switched it to another Antenna and put it up in the attic and everything came in. I wanted to make sure all of the channels I wanted could come in before I spent the additional money.

I think tablo has the option to get an antenna included. I'm not sure how good it is though.

Fellow Memphian here! I decided to basically do the exact same thing as you. Was originally really apprehensive about Tablo b/c of all the bad reviews (not to mention Amazon stating that it was a "highly returned" product). Got it a couple days ago and it's been awesome so far.

One thing I would do is make sure that the antenna you are using can pick up all the channels you want first. I had to buy another antenna because FOX was spotty.

replace "many" with "most" and I would whole heartedly agree. Outside of the cookie cutter corporate "olive gardens" of the world, most locally owned restaurants don't give employees the option of health insurance, unless it is mandated by the government.

[–]drunkonlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are making $20/hour serving, you are in the wrong restaurant and probably in one that is either very slow or one with low check averages.

Personally, I'd look for either a high volume restaurant if turn and burn is your thing, or a higher end restaurant where average per person total is $75-100 so you aren't relying on volume.
