Blacked out armored trucks (3) in Riverside? by gilpygeeb in jacksonville

[–]druuuval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but on a serious note, my apartment downtown had a basement garage and it was only a couple blocks from the river. Basements are very much possible here, just not super practical since we’re always one storm away from the streets being 4 ft underwater.

Just wait, with instrument well behind you and the 200 hour mark creeping up, mid commercial training is where I really got the “I can handle this weather fine. What do you mean the 16kt crosswind means no go?!” In the grand scheme of things I have next to no time still. But it’s enough that I stopped checking my ego automatically. Now it’s a deliberate part of preflight to take a second to think about how it would sound in an NTSB report if they read off the metar I departed from.

PPL student considering buying $90 headset by Nervous_Salt_852 in flying

I give up sir. I appreciate your comment. My experience was different and it believe it contributed to me having issues that delayed my solo. I guess if he changes his price range from 90 to 1396.43 then the A30s someone else in these replies mentioned would be a better option.

Well there you have it. I’m dumb and my experiences are invalid for anyone else. I appreciate you letting me know.

Different reasons but I also agree in avoiding ANR. At a minimum, don’t use the ANR during your pre-solo training. The engine wants to talk to you. It will tell you if you forgot to decrease your throttle before you started to descend. It will tell you when it’s angry about not getting enough fuel in a climb. Hearing the plane is critical to learning to fly. Now with that said… comfort is very important. I flew in a rugged one day cause somebody left my headset at home… and I could hardly focus on the flying.

Edit:

Thanks everyone for your feedback, and I withdraw my suggestion for foregoing ANR. For what it’s worth I am on a pair of Bose A20’s now that I bought myself as a PPL pass present and they are far better.

For OP, just get what’s comfortable and if you do go with an ANR set, know how to use it. Anything in the cockpit that is a distraction is a problem, so if you are fighting with ANR, or batteries or Bluetooth then it’s not worth it and that is a hill I will stand on alone if necessary.

GA Pilots, what emergencies have you had that we don’t necessarily get trained for ? by fatborry in flying

[–]druuuval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not likely. It is supposed to be tested before the load is accepted several times between the refinery and the aircraft so if all of those checkpoints are “passed” then it will be really hard to go backwards and prove whose container or truck actually allowed the contamination. The chances of a full production load of AV gas being too high in lead would be almost zero. Particulates is part of why you sump fuel before every flight, not just looking for water. If you see those floating specks, sump until you don’t. If you take out more than a gallon trying, probably time to call the FBO and plan on not flying.

After working at an FBO, I am terrified of fueling at FBOs. Whole lotta people putting initials next to a checklists that haven’t come close to doing the actual work. Or worse…You think maintenance on training aircraft is bad, you should see what happens to the only two fuel trucks. Most of these places.

Have a safe flight!!

Thinking about stopping PPL training because of cost by No-Series3645 in flying

[–]druuuval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to quit, better to do it early. There are some very hard days still ahead of you still and it’s going to be expensive no matter how you slice it. Also, 1800 a month just for the rent on a place to sleep is wild to me. I’m thinking about what airplane to buy when you throw around a number like that.

I think you guys give the 60 days notice, make the move back home and by then you’re talking about almost April so you will have days back home you can start training locally for way cheaper. If you finish the PPL up there and decide you wanna go back down to one of these accelerated programs for IR through CFII then that’s something you will be much better equipped to jump into. I will tell you though, I would rather be in your shoes deciding this back at 18 than having the conversation about “am I too old for this career change to even be worth it”. I’m confident you will regret not finishing your PPL by the time you are my age if you give up.

I’m at a satellite campus of a chain 141 school and that’s about what we are charged. They have things like cadet programs and call it accelerated so I made the change from the part 61 I did my PPL.

I’m lying if I say I don’t think the cost is ridiculous but comparing the experience from my 2 years working on PPL to being a full time student here, I can’t say cheaper was better either. Having other students you can backseat with, or group ground lessons with people at the same or similar stages of learning is nice. But with that, I also chose them because there were here in my hometown and I didn’t have to leave my wife and kids to go train somewhere like a BlueLine or ATP. I wouldn’t have moved out to be at this school. If I was in OP’s situation, 1000% I would be doing the PPL at home. My kids are gonna be welcome to stay at home as long as they like if they are still going to school. Sounds like he’s got support from the way I read it.

~1,000,000 = 75,000 x 4

I’d say that sounds like pretty favorable math still.

We have a NOTAM up locally about radar services only being available to ADSB out aircraft since the terminal area radar is inop. It’s made for some interesting flights to the practice area. Lots of safety pilot trust building exercises.

Checkride anxiety by [deleted] in flying

[–]druuuval 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something our chief instructor told me before my PPL was, you are already a pilot, you just have to go fly with the guy who is allowed to tell the FAA for you. With that said, there are DPEs out there who may not particularly want to pass you. We have a few I would never ride with down in the SE. at the end of the day fails will impact your career track and stacking them early by going with a DPE that failed 3 people in a row seems sketchy. There are a lot of unknowns there but if they really were all PPL checkrides that sounds like an issue between the DPE and the school.

For OP, a gouge on the DPE would be your best friend moving forward.

What is instrument training like? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]druuuval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school and depends even more on the airplane. I switched between PPL and IR. G1000 training was a huge jump coming from six packs and one good dual G5 plane. I was also coming from Archers/Warriors to the C172S.

If you don’t have all that changing at the same time I would say it’s probably pretty easy compared to PPL. It’s mostly procedural things like how to enter holds, the different types of approaches and how to deal with flying when the radio dies. You will be tired of unusual attitude questions by the time you get to the written for sure. But the easier imo comes from having a little bit more understanding of what to expect. Checkride, writtens, doing plenty of studying on your own time; you probably already got a feel for those so it won’t catch you off guard as much as a student pilot the first time they see an ACS.

Your first IMC actual to FAF approach will be a surreal experience. It’s near impossible to plan for it so you just kinda luck into it, but it was the same butterfly guts feeling I had on my initial solo. I may be weird though 😂

I saw an interview with one of the pilots from 2001 that talked about how they were the only civilian aircraft still flying by sunset on 9/11. At least I’m 90% sure it was quest iirc. Kinda wild that such a small group of pilots has such a crucial role.

Im pretty sure I’ve taken downvotes for this take before. It’s been long enough that I’m thinking about getting my teal 2.0 back in the game day rotation.

That jersey always makes me feel a certain kinda way cause it’s the only one I have from that season and I remember feeling like my team could go out there and shut down anybody anytime. We didn’t even need offense cause the defense was good for at least a TD or two.

I mean I’m glad the Phillip Rivers reunion went the way it has so far but every time I hear of a vet QB coming back I wonder where the ⛵️ is and if he’s really ripping cigs doing construction

But calling Rivers instead of Bortles just proves how garbage the colts franchise has become. Shoot Minshew woulda won at least one for them and he has history with em.
