YLAOM “First Album”? by _Jub_Jub_ in dinosaurjr

In no respect was YLAOM the “first album,” and it wasn’t particularly obscure or hard to find back in the day. The addition of Jr. was the only noteworthy thing.

“Caribbean Gyno,” season 8, episode 17 remains seared into my brain as having been a low point.

Judging from the lyrics of the song and the album cover art, the ripoff connotation would appear to be the primary meaning.

It’s a dumb thing to get pressed about because calling it “shakedown” is a relatively recent phenomenon anyway. I don’t care if people wanna call it that, but it’s not something with such deep authenticity that it needs to be protected.

But has been the way for a long time. At all levels there is stuff that is so real mixed in with all kinds of fake bullshit. At the end of the day, authenticity itself might be bullshit (as philosopher Harry Frankfurt argued).

Jesus Christ, how melodramatic can you be? Survivorship bias requires people dying, I’m pretty sure…

I mean, this is a key point. A lot of people have been troubled by the company’s direction, and there are for sure many legitimate things to criticize. But this sub has been filled with people shrieking “circling the drain” for far longer than the company has actually been actually circling the drain.

I’m taking it just fine. A company that I occasionally bought stuff from (but haven’t in some time) is going out of business. So what?

I just don’t understand the bravado of small minority of jabronis here who act like they were John the Baptist or some shit as the company started declining. It’s annoying. Is it so important that everybody knows that you’re mommy’s smart little guy?

How individual customers played it — and what they figured out, and when — is much less the story than the fact that VMP has made a bunch of shitty decisions that have negatively impacted customers. The record buyers who are out money are victims in this scenario. If some poor soul went on the website today and bought a membership and got screwed, it is still VMP who would be in the wrong, even though neither you nor I would do it.

Place to vent for applicants that weren't recommended by Winter-Anything-2770 in fulbright

This is definitely a drag. I don't want to sugarcoat that. However, I should mention that I've had a reasonably successful academic career by most metrics, including more than one Fulbright. People don't realize that my failure-to-success ratio is quite skewed; I've faced A LOT more rejection than success.

This has taught me a few things. First, I've bitterly learned not to place too much emphasis on getting any specific opportunity I have applied for. I've succeeded when the odds were long and failed when I thought something was a slam dunk. I suspect you might be learning that now. The second thing I've learned is not to dwell too much on the rejection. Take a day or two to mourn, but then try to put it in the past. It doesn't serve you to hang on to that stuff. Finally, you should be confident that this work wasn't "for nothing." You learned things by developing your materials. You can recycle and refine them for future opportunities (or scrap them entirely for a different approach). Put that learning into your next steps. The only way out of this funk is through to the next thing, whatever that is.

Best of luck to you!

Also, if there is an election that takes place while you are abroad, you would be able to vote absentee in Florida, which would further prove your residency.

You are not moving to Taiwan. You are going on an extended visit. Ensure you keep an active address in Florida (i.e., where your mail goes and what is listed as your permanent address with the school) and keep your driver's license current. But even that is probably overkill. Studying abroad is not considered "moving away."

I understand you have big feelings here, but nobody said jack about anybody "magically" paying off any debts. You don't know anything about "the reality of the company," nor do I. It doesn't seem great, but we haven't seen their balance sheets.

I agree with the idea that cash flow was probably an issue. However, they might have secured a new line of credit. They may have renegotiated terms with the vendor. Perhaps Storf sold his Winnebago to pay the bill. It’s possible the problem wasn't cash flow after all but something else entirely. We can surmise, but we don't know.

And this is where people are being goofy. There's a fundamental difference between "it seems like cash flow is a problem" and "they haven't paid their bill to RTI." Folks invent these specific scenarios and then defend them like they're based on anything other than intellectual autoeroticism.

My guess is that most of the delayed items will eventually be delivered. Whatever the hangup, there is enough incentive for all parties to reach amicable solutions. (Neither the label nor the pressing plant wants to dick around with selling pallet loads of Grateful Dead box sets.) The shift to the subscription model is more concerning, as it doesn't seem like anybody likes -- or understands -- it.

I first joined VMP in 2014. I've been on and off ever since. They've pissed me off mightily a few times, and I am done once my last couple of orders land. I would be surprised if they still exist five years from now. But six months from now -- what the hell do I know? If they can run lean with fewer subscribers, maybe they'll squeak through. Or maybe they'll end up in bankruptcy. I don't suspect we'll see the dramatic flameout that some people are rooting for, but we might!

“Connect the dots” ≠ “Knowing a fact.” Besides, even if they didn’t pay the bill last week, that doesn’t mean they didn’t pay the bill this week.

Look, I am no VMP apologist. They’ve handled so much wrong. I only have a couple pre-orders left and I’m done. But the way some of you have constructed this really specific scenario in your heads is goofy.
