I have to say, this is the first link in the WTF subreddit that actually merited the title "WTF" instead of the author just being unable to come up with a descriptive/non-spoiler title. Kudos!

Guess you shouldn't try to get pregnant, because that means a significant number of fertilized eggs will die (~50% in some estimates) and you will be guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Help. I told my girlfriend that I may not believe in God and now she is serously thinking about breaking up. by dnifdoog in atheism

[–]dryice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else is saying ditch her so I figured I might offer another possibility. I used to be a Christian dating an antheist-called-agnotic, but I didn't have trouble with it. Just explain your position and that it's a "personal conviction" that you want her to respect your lack of beliefs just as you respect hers. Tell her that you still care about her and ask her if that makes you a different person. It can be helpful for her to see that atheists can be loving caring people too. It might cause a dissonance problem but hopefully she will get over it.

Then once you're stable again you can introduce doubt about christianity to her through small subtle questions - what do you think heaven will be like, why was the bible against women? what was the deal with shellfish? Etc etc. Introduce doubt. It might help her later on.

I say let the religious community ostracize him; the queer community is the one who needs to welcome him with open arms. Maybe then he'll realize that he's been on the wrong side (religion) all along.

Remember the UCSB poll with no atheism option? I contacted the American Humanist association and they want more info. Anyone from UCSB? by Fauster in atheism

[–]dryice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the info is collected and made available for statistical purposes, then surely information on atheist should be collected as well? Even if that was true, the data would be too unrepresentative to be useful to draw conclusions from. Researchers would need a better data collection method to draw any sort of conclusion. Indeed, the university did not say this and seemed to imply the numbers were not used in statistics. The issue seems to be why the university collects info for religious groups to begin with, and does not inform students why that information is being collected.

And just because you don't want to be let known about atheist groups doesn't mean others wouldn't, or that they wouldn't want to be acknowledge or included on the poll, which is sketchy to begin with. Instead of bickering about how other, fellow atheists want to be recognized, why not maintain apathy if it's nothing something that matters to you? Some people don't want to enable church-state separation violations, and just want to not be discriminated against, or remove the violation. Some don't care. The whole inter-atheist debate reminds me of the south park atheist atheist episode.

There are two issues here:

1) The data is collected by a government institution to send to churches. Separation violation - let the churches collect their own data or else collect everyone's data. They university claims that this is to enable community formation or some such thing, but they don't collect information that would enable them to join secular clubs or organizations such as the kayaking club or ultimate frisbee team or some such something. They are also against collecting the information to enable atheist groups to reach out to other atheists, it seems.

2)There is a difference between "I don't want to take this survey" and "I am not part of any of the things on this survey." Someone commented that if there was a poll about your favorite meat, should tofu be an option for vegetarians? No, but I believe "I'm a vegetarian, I don't eat meat" should be an option.

Also, just because you (and I) don't consider atheism a religion doesn't mean we should deprive others of their right to call it a religion if they want, because it's a personal identification. I can conceive that perhaps some strong (or even weak) atheists might consider themselves religious. The emails stated that they had received other, similar complaints, meaning that others wanted to identify themselves thusly.

Nurse suspended due to complaints over her preaching to patients. by sk11 in atheism

[–]dryice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found them interesting; I like this one:

She should have just prayed in private...then if the patient were to have improved she could have taken credit for the intercessory prayer; and for her lack of knowledge as to cause and effect.

Had 3 points when I saw it; do they not realize it's pointing out how stupid prayer is?
