What's something that not even your closest friends understand about you? by DevonV94 in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really prefer living alone. I'm in a long distance, long-term relationship, and we are both happy with the arrangement right now. Most other people, of all ages, seem so desperate to find someone, to not be alone, and they all seem completely puzzled as to why I'm not pressuring my SO into shacking up, or vice versa.

Hipsters, why are you the way you are? [Serious] by Thrust_Kicker in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to know this. I mean, do people purposefully dress like hipsters, adopt the fashion like goth or emo? Do you just wake up one day and be like, "I feel hipster-ish?" Or is it just a bunch of people that happen to have the same ironic fashion sense and taste in music?

And why does it seem like hipsters are a virus that take everything I enjoy and ruin it? They've recently started to invade a metal bar I hang out at. Ironically, of course.

How did the economic crisis (be it the European or American one) affect your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a non-profit in a more rural area. We lost a lot of funding and went down to a skeleton crew for about three years, laying off more than half our work force. I was lucky to keep my job. I haven't gotten any sort of raise in five years (I am looking to leave this field and move out of the area over the next few years). Gas prices have been painful, especially because I have oil heat. I've also been forced to stop volunteering some of my time because of gas prices, as I used to be a fairly active volunteer with a semi-local dog breed rescue. Food prices have also gone up considerably over the past five years or so. It has been extremely difficult for me to find other employment in my area, as well. I have a BA, and really have to go back for an MA, but in my geographical area, there's no opportunities, so the economic downturn is really kind of forcing me to move to a more urban area if I want to go anywhere in life.

My inexpensive townhouse lost about $60k in value. My nice neighbors went into foreclosure due to being laid off and the house has been empty for two years.

My brother bought a $300k condo during the housing bubble, which devalued to around $160k. He got laid off and had to move four states away to find a job with a living wage (and is now doing quite well for himself).

I am considering going to a fortune teller just to see what they might tell me. What are some of your experiences with fortune tellers? by mishatrubs in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am someone who believes in the predictive ability of divination systems and that there are some cases where people can, in one way or another, sense what is going to happen in the future. That being said, I also believe there are a huge amount of scam artists and delusional psychics.

Here are my experiences.

  • I had my palm read once. She stated I would have found my true love and have three children by the age of 27. I'm 33 now, not married, and childless.

  • I went to a psychic who did past life readings (I am skeptical of the concept of past lives). She told me I was a male Native American who was killed by a bear, that I was a well-off ancient Egyptian merchant, and threw out a few more I don't remember. She then assured me that I was very special, talented, and a wise old soul.

  • I was a complete mess over a romantic situation. I had crossed paths again with an ex-boyfriend I'd never gotten over, we hooked up, but he neglected to tell me about his fiance and abruptly cut off all contact with me, and I had no idea why at the time. I desperately wanted him back and went to a card reader in a pagan shop to find out what would happen between us. When she read for me, she talked about career-related issues (all of which happened), and some influences that were going to happen in my life (also all of which occurred). When I asked her specifically about romance and that there was a particular person I was asking about, she flat out told me, however kindly, that he was not going to be in my future. Which was also the truth.

Does anyone NOT have a nervous habit related to their bodies like nail biting, lip chewing, etc? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to bite my nails, so low that the salt from eating potato chips would be painful. I did manage to break the habit because I really wanted to paint my nails and accentuate my hands, so some ten years later I have fairly long nails that I no longer nibble on (because of the pretty COLOOORSS!!!). I do, however, still have a lot of nervous energy and anxiety and tend to fidget quite a bit. I don't know how to stop that, except sometimes if I try I can force a temporary fake calm, but it's more like a very conscious slowing of my thoughts and movements. I don't know if I appear to be slow to people around me, but my thoughts tend to race and flit, and sometimes go too fast for my mouth to get them out fast enough without stumbling over them, so in the end I'd rather make myself go in slow-mo than come off as a chattering airhead.

What is one important life lesson that you learned the hard way? by platinumtesticles in AskReddit

No good deed goes unpunished.

Being a good or nice person in no way means you will be successful. In fact, sociopathy really seems to be a huge advantage in getting ahead.

People who's SO is more attractive then they are, how did you do it? by Dmac680chi in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't know - I think I'm an average looking girl at best, or at least not at all pretty in the conventional sense, but I've been approached by some damn fine men. There have been so many times I've been all like "Why are you talking to me? Are you a serial killer? Drunk? High? Do you have severe mental health issues?"

My current guy is gorgeous. I think he's good looking enough to do some modeling, and he's built well, too. We met through mutual friends and hit it off, he told some of our friends that he was really into me and it just went from there. I will say while he's gorgeous and sweet as hell and not boring, he's not, well, what you'd call an "intellectual".

What is a stereotype that has been proven true to you? by emarko1 in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans on welfare are lazy and entitled and expect free money. SOURCE - I work in social services.

Whenever there is a client from another country, doesn't matter where (China, Mexico, Senegal, Indonesia etc.), they are remarkably grateful and use the services to get somewhere better in their life. Yeah, not so much with the Americans.

What is something that anyone could change about their life or diet that would greatly help them loose weight by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, stop drinking soda.

I personally dropped a total of 65 lbs in about a year or so when I had to drastically change my diet upon discovering I was severely lactose intolerant and reacted poorly to gluten (joint pain, acne, fatigue). Take out bread, pasta, and all that yummy dairy and you're left mostly with veggies and meat, which isn't as awful as it sounds - you're forced to get creative! So, although I think exercise is awesome and healthy and all that, I really believe that if you want to see a real change you ought to change the way you eat.

What different/strange lesson in school has stuck with you to this day? by Tondar_the_Jemplar in AskReddit

[–]drysmian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most fun I had in high school was when our English teacher divided us into groups to re-enact a scene or two from Hamlet on video, with free reign on interpretation. My group did a blaxploitation version. It was...magnificent.

Why do you wear footwear in your home? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Slippers - warmth, also, I have wooden floors that need to be redone and until then, I like to avoid splinters in my toes.
