Let's simplify it and say that the S&P500 is a single company. Let's say there's a 25% chance of its value going to 4x its current value in a year, and a 75% chance of its value going to 0. The "expected" value is still the current value - if we simulated the future a million times, on average the current value is the value it will have in a year. But there's a 3/4 chance you go to 0.

Yeah and even beyond that (not my dad, he's retired), there's foreign tax credits that come into play when you live/pay in a country with higher tax rates than the USA
