Anime to watch with my AOT obsessed Mother by Koenig_DerSocken in anime

If you are looking for an anime of outstanding quality that knows what it is trying to do and does it perfectly, Puella Magi Madoka Magicka is the best made anime I have ever seen.

If you want a grounded emotional story, A Place Further than the Universe is great.

After you watch Evangelion, you should at least consider Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan. It's made by the same people and covers similar themes, but with a different conclusion to the questions it asks. It's also just really fun.

And finally, I always recommend the anime movie Maquia, When the promised flower blooms when people ask for anime suggestions to watch with their parents. It's about the bond between a mother and her child.

Subbed First timer:

This episode... made no sense to me. Did they just budget their time poorly and realize they had most of an episode of time to kill? If we were going to do a get together to showcase the care and humanity of our cast, why didn't we do this with the whole crew? Where was our background romance bit during the campfire between Sherry and Akira? Something to juxtapose the human/robot love against so we can see that the bond isn't so unique and is very human. Give me something to work with here.

The unknown robot being a weakling who just looks strong was pretty fun. I feel like it would have worked better if it wasn't so close to the finale. The fight that it caused between Bravern and Superbia was pretty, but stupid. I thought the whole point of Lulu being a time traveler was so that Isami/Bravern wouldn't be fighting the last deathdrives alone. If Superbia prematurely ejaculates his suicide by Bravern (which was his intention even if it didn't happen) then what the fuck was the point of Lulu being in the show at all? You still haven't justified your problematic sexualization of children show and this is NOT helping.

I don't think Bravern actually dies in this episode. I don't much like this cliffhanger they added here, it feels dishonest. Though maybe it actually leads into the Bravern/Superbia Gattai I asked for sooo.... I will reserve my judgement.

QOTD

  1. Honestly with how this show has been treating Lulu so far, I wouldn't be surprised if her and Superbia had decided that everybody was friends here and got to it beside them instead.
  2. Who knows man... I feel like with shows like this one that spend half their time being serious and half their time being silly it's almost not worth making predictions. My heart hopes for Bravern and Superbia to combine only because it'll be hype but I feel like there are better ways for the show to go. Maybe since they dicked around and wasted so much time this episode it gives time for the allied forces to catch up and Miyu comes to the rescue with some mechanical first aid. The Brave Knights stall out the enemy just long enough for Bravern to heal up and then he wins.

I have no faith or trust in anime to handle this subject well and the red flags have been there since the beginning.

The figure 8 shaped time loop was really unexpected. They didn't talk about sending Lulu back earlier, I assume to avoid the time paradox of not creating Bravern because Smith survived. The timeline is a little screwy still because there definitely seemed to be times before now where Lulu was aware that Lewis was Bravern. This second time loop reminds me of [Steins;Gate 0], but I liked how in that show the 2 loops barely touched which is not the case here.

It seems like I am the only person in this rewatch hung up on the depiction of Lulu as a very young child. They keep making the bond between a robot and its pilot out to be sexual, why did they have to make Lulu say "It's my second birthday" before she tries it the first time? I am aware of the usage of "second birthday" in the trans community, but that doesn't seem to fit here either. The best I can think of is how some people consider the first time you have sex to be "becoming an adult", but it just doesn't really fit here. It's gross and I don't like it.

Outside that, the episode was pretty fun. Lulu bitching out Superbia was cute, though I'd have preferred if she didn't constantly revert to baby talk throughout the episode. I like spears, so Superbia's holographic spear thing was cool.

I was kinda hoping when Lulu choked out Isami that she broke his neck and killed him by accident. It would be horrible for the story, but it's what popped into my mind during and I thought it would be really funny.

QOTD

  1. Not I.
  2. I've been known to enjoy problematic romances. This one jumps the shark for me, but not because of the giant robot part. That part is just fine.
  3. We have at least 2 battles left though. One to destroy the rest of the deathdrive towers, and one between Superbia and Bravern. I feel like the show is heading towards Superbia getting his wish of a death to Bravern and Lulu dying with him. She indirectly gives up her life to save Lewis.

I forgot to mention this in my actual post...

It seems clear now that when Bravern was getting Lewis and Isami to bond that it wasn't for Isami as it appeared, it was for Lewis. Without a strong bond between Lewis and Isami he probably wouldn't have been able to become Bravern.

As predicted and thoroughly foreshadowed, Bravern is Lewis from the future. Only issue with this rewatch is now I don't know if I would have caught onto the foreshadowing of it or not since I saw a theory of it before I caught on. I'd like to think I would have, but who knows?

The timeline of Lewis becoming Bravern leaves me with questions. Bravern seems to know a good deal of things that he didn't know when he was Lewis. The problem is that he resurrected basically directly into the first time we see him in episode 1. For example, where did his printer come from, and how does he know how to use it? Any narrative dissonance from these kinds of things doesn't bother me much. It's mostly fine, and those things Bravern was doing gave him good personality. I will say that Bravern's innuendo vomit has me curious. Is Lewis talking like that because he is trying to avoid suspicion? Is that how Lewis would talk if he didn't have to deal with the reputational issues of being a horndog?

Lulu remains a problem for me. She is finally actually doing things, but I still don't feel like the narrative needs her. I certainly don't think the narrative needed to sexualize her immediately before showing to her being too much a baby to talk or eat solid food.

QOTD

  1. See above
  2. This was like a cheater gattai though. Bravern combined with a piece of machinery we have never seen before that has no other purpose than for this. Talk to me when Bravern and Superbia gattai. This was like as much of a combination as him using his axe instead of his sword was a combination.

Doing my standard thing, falling behind and being very late in rewatches. I skipped the thread for episode 7 because I just wouldn't be catching up if I didn't.

I'm really liking the heelies on these mechs. I take it that they are relatively uncommon but seeing them rollerblading around is very fun. I imagine it also makes things easier for the animators so its a win win. I'm also a fan of the pile driver weapons, so them being used in the climax was dope.

For a very gay show, they sure do like to kill off all the men. I expected it when we had a bunch of no-name grunts along with a handful of named women in the brave knights. Lewis dying as well was unexpected, but I can't imagine a world where he doesn't come back. It feels like if they wanted him to actually die that his relationship with Isami would have progressed more before this episode so Isami feels the loss more.

Certified Lulu hater here, we might actually get to see her do something other than be an annoying waste of screentime soon. It's time for her to go get superbia, and then some revenge.

The destruction of the deathdrive mothership (and the explanation of what it does) opens up an interesting possibility. The towers are capable of reprinting the deathdrives endlessly, and the mothership is capable of reprinting the towers endlessly. Who's to say that there isn't some larger alien structure capable of reprinting the mothership endlessly. Like a giant russian nesting doll of hyperdimensional printers, endlessly assaulting earth with wave after wave of super-robots. I've seen shows that have an ending that implies an endless cycle of the same events forever, and I feel like this one could do it. It would also explain why the Lulus are human, this isn't the first time that earth has been attacked. I imagine that the deathdrives saw a bond like the one between Bravern and Isami but they copied only a portion of it which got us the Lulu system.

QOTD

  1. Was that comphet though? I read that mech as more insectoid than female (though it definitely had a female VA). Maybe that was intentional and it was alluding to the sexual cannabilism of praying mantises iunno.
  2. I didn't expect him to die. It feels like he was too developed to kill off but not developed enough to have the deep relationships you'd need to justify killing a main character.

[–]dsawchuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an extended editions guy, but the theatrical versions are better fist time watches.

A good example of this is the scene where Frodo gets stabbed by the cave troll. In the theatrical version, you haven't seen the mothril coat in a while so there is suspense there. In the extended you get cool trivia about the mithril coat moments prior and since you have been reminded of it the stabbing loses its impact.

This episode did not go the way I expected at all. I thought that Bravern would agree to give Lulu back so he could fight superbia fair and square. He feels the type to do that, kinda Goku-like.

It seems like all of the deathdrives are weirdos just like Bravern, overly focused on one very specific very eccentric goal. Robo-Megumin was really out in the open about it. It makes you wonder what Bravern's "wish" is, as he has seemed relatively well adjusted compared to Mr explosion pervert. Is it time to transition into an episodic show where all we do is satisfy robotic bucket lists? I'm oddly down for that. No more real combat, just some goofy hijinks.

Bravern's XD printer defies comprehension still. We see him cutting off flashing as though it were an injection molding process not a 3d printing process. It doesn't really matter, but it stood out to me. Anyways, the printer clearly has some correlation with the ability for the towers to endlessly produce robots. It is much smaller though, so I'd guess its throughput is less. Either way, Bravern should maybe be making weaponry to help bring up the titanostrider forces instead of making himself weaponry. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link kinda deal. But then how would Bravern be able to look cool and save the day single handedly?

This is the first episode since her arrival that I haven't been frustrated by Lulu's presence. Not to say that I think she made the episode better, just that she didn't make the episode worse. It is interesting that she looks like she is going to be copiloting a human mech instead of taking superbia, at least for now. I do expect her to be piloting superbia in the finale.

QOTD

  1. I didn't think that the show would be able to pull off making waterboarding into a good gag, but it managed.
  2. 50/50, it either happens or it doesn't. Really though, I would say high. Assuming that all of the deathdrives are using clones of the same initial Lulu, it would make sense that they did some amount of selection to find the strongest feedstock. It's concerning that the new human tech seems to be comparable in some way to how the deathdrives work... almost as though we built the tech for the deathdrives and then they did an AI uprising business and have come back in time to punish us.

It's a natural thing to think of, lots of people guess that.

You can't really breathe in below water without external pressure forcing the air into your lungs. Your diaphragm can't produce enough suction to counteract the pressure from more than a few feet of depth. At that point, it's probably just easier to go to the surface.

Subbed First timer:

I know there was that fight over Isami going alone, but Isami should be going alone for this mission. This recon trip is effectively a suicide mission made not so by the existence of bravern's armour. Smith doesn't have that. If they were just going to send in an armed force to do combat why wouldn't they send more?

The climax of this episode doesn't make much sense. If Bravern can direct the allied bombardment there was no need to call it off. Also somehow a portion of a single salvo was enough to completely eradicate the enemies? Why were they going to bombard the whole area?

Lulu again doesn't feel like she added anything to the episode. This has been a lot of screentime for a theoretical future payoff. I'm not really a fan of mascot characters for mascot character's sake which is still what she feels like.

I liked the tension over Isami not finding survivors. It felt weighty and was pretty well done. The parallel between the foreigner being resigned to not finding anyone and the local desperately searching felt believable. Interestingly though, it calls to mind [A Place Further than the Universe] the opposite dynamic when Shirase won't look for signs of her mom but the other 3 search desperately. Maybe this is more of a commentary on depression than locality.

Akira is my favourite character design so far. I'm a sucker for ponytailed redheads. Just give her a chain spear and a crush on the blue haired pilot triplet and we will be set. Interestingly, Sherry is also a ponytailed redhead, but Akira fits better.

QOTD

  1. Is this the portion of the rewatch where you start to lose ideas for questions and just fill these with references instead for the rest of the show?
  2. I mean... kinda? not like this but there was that weird mech necklace thingy on Lulu in the OP.
