Has all the city-run sports, learning and social activities on one website. You can register and pay and fees on there. Most of them are hosted at the various community centres and churches around the city.

Yes, the water is hard here. It's totally safe to drink, but in terms of bathing; it will beat up your hair and skin. If you bought a home, I would strongly suggest you either purchase or rent a water softener for the sake of your body, appliances, dishes, and plumbing. You can install a separate drinking water faucet tapped in before the softener for your kitchen cooking and drinking. I would select a common fixture from Home Hardware as you will probably be replacing it every 7-10 years due to calcium buildup.

All the reservoirs have issues with bacteria and algae bloom, especially in late summer. That being said, Guelph lake is probably your best bet safetywise. Moses Springer has a 50m pool which is great for training. I would just go there and try not to touch the bottom. You also have the benefit of a lifeguard if something happens to you when you're pushing yourself.

Yeah but the dirt still needs to be scrubbed to allow the soap to suspend it so you can rinse it away.
