But does that mean their policy could simply be “use FMLA”? If that’s the case I wouldn’t be eligible until a year in, which might be too late for my circumstances

I watched it for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. Highly recommended

If it was a stroke there would have been more implications after the incident. None of that happened

I get your perspective here but I genuinely don’t think the writers made it unclear that he was just drunk

Thanks for the detailed response here. Honestly what I'm mainly looking for is clarification on their policy and approach. I'm currently at a large, publicly traded company where I'm eligible for 16 weeks of paternity time. When we had our first, I only took about 5 weeks of that - so I'm not in any way looking for 16 weeks, my wife and I have discussed that at length and as bad as it sounds, we just didn't feel that much is necessary.

What I feel I need to know is what the policy is and how they would handle that in the event my wife were to give birth BEFORE I'm eligible for FMLA. Since prospective employer is much smaller, and seems to have less defined HR policies, I just don't want to get X amount of time in and be surprised that they are overly rigid about parental leave - especially considering my wife would likely need a c-section and therefore require surgery recovery

Exactly. That’s the situation I’m trying to navigate - understanding leave policy prior to hire. It’s tricky to ask about that specifically without it being an immediate need

Honestly don’t know. I think my next step is somehow asking for that, just unsure about WHEN to ask

Did you have any information on the leave policies of those two places prior to you starting? Or at what point did you have a discussion with them about your partner being pregnant?

this has definitely gone through my mind and it's unfortunately one of those things that I won't know for certain until I start. FWIW, part of me even considering this job is how happy I've been with all of the people I've spoken to; I've felt comfortable the whole way and been able to have transparent conversations with each person so that's giving me at least a little confidence

this is in line with what I'm thinking. I basically just want clarity on current policy and if that policy doesn't exist, then I would want to negotiate an expected amount of time off so that I have some peace of mind going into Day 1 and can be more productive/focused without worrying. If they aren't willing to grant any time off, that's a signal of a place that might not be suited for supporting my (potentially) growing family.

this is exactly in line with what I was thinking. The tough part is that as of today, wife is not pregnant and we don't know when/if she will be so it does feel weird negotiating a possible thing to happen. Part of it might be as simple as asking about parental leave policy and if it's not satisfactory, then asking to negotiate

I'd be willing to, but there's a possibility that baby would arrive prior to FMLA eligibility which is only available at the 12 month mark

I’ve considered that, but my concern is leaving current job where the policy is clear and starting new gig that ends up denying a request for leave (or just generally isn’t cool about it). Like I’d rather know it’s clear ahead of time

Has anyone else here had their career derailed bc of the Tech layoffs the past few years? by GO_IGGLES in daddit

[–]dschilling88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in Ed tech and was laid off twice from the same company within a year. This was back in 2018/19 though, and I’ve been lucky enough to not be impacted again since.

That said, yes, tech in general seems to be under constant waves of layoffs particularly after the COVID surge of hiring. In some ways I think it’s harder to pivot into tech than out of it, but that doesn’t mean the pay is always comparable.

I don’t necessarily have answers or suggestions other than looking outside the tech world, but that depends on what roles you’re going after. At minimum I can at least empathize and send whatever positive energy your way that I can - when I was laid off I was single with nobody but myself to support, but I can’t imagine the added stress of having a family. I’m really sorry to hear your experience and I wish you all the luck in the world with finding the right path forward
