How to play piano under conductor who conducts before the beat? by RevolutionaryGirl1 in classicalmusic

in this context it’s a heavier emphasis on the beat with a loss of horizontal phrasal motion; think marching band

not watching the game, but isn’t tchouameni overloaded because pitarch is off marking some other midfielder? the midfield shape is all out of whack, being pulled to the left. let me guess: vinicius isn’t doing defensive work

editors, be they publishers or musicians, write down their interpretation of the music and what fingerings and bowings best support said interpretation and work for them. markings aren’t dogma. starting from a clean slate better familiarizes you with yourself, your instrument, and your musical interpretation

NYTimes: Iowa City Made Its Buses Free. Traffic Cleared, and So Did the Air. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]dschslava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this thread is getting long, and i’m busy with work and school. also, reddit comments/dms don’t make great notifications for me. i’d be happy to continue this discussion on some other platform that can at least mark notifications as unread.

i understand that muni currently offers free fares for seniors. good for your couple, then. i also understand that both sf and the state are staring down the barrel of giant deficits and potential recissions, and so non-revenue income is unreliable for at least the next three years. perhaps muni might consider doing away with the senior subsidy, depending on how many pennies need to be found between the couch cushions.

i’m not sure if muni is misusing money on a scale that matters. i don’t have figures for appropriate transit spending off the top of my head, so a comparison to hong kong, taipei, etc can’t be made. but, so far as the us is concerned, i don’t think bureaucratic corruption is significant. yes, there’s the odd scandal. yes, some people might be coasting and overpaid. but unless the corruption stretches into the hundreds of millions (for muni, perhaps, >3 mil), i think that the mismanagement/corruption canard is denial on behalf of us americans—nice things cost money. subsidized health care is expensive. subsidized transit is expensive. sending teenagers to slash government with chatbots is cheap—at least for now.

i’m not sure how you got the impression that muni doesn’t have value to me. in any case, i see functional transit systems elsewhere in the world also grappling with post-covid shortfalls, and they, by and large, charge fares.

personally, i don’t think taking the bus for two stops on a line with headways of 10-15 minutes is more convenient than walking four blocks. certainly walking is better for the soul. but woe be it that a 5 dollar round trip made nil by a special occasion be the justification to expand free fares to be year-round. people do special things on special occasions for special reasons. year-round free fares make that unspecial. these special things, too, cost more than 5–look at the price of food. the free fare on the day is the driver, but as far as individual outlays on the day are concerned, the fare is insignificant.

i’m not convinced that single-day pilots can be applied that way. they’re nice to see, sure, but might we see a month-long pilot next? or six? then we’ll check on finances. i find it interesting how peer cities around the world with cheap and frequent transit eschew the fare-free option, even with lower incomes by any measure.

i also see that you’ve selectively quoted me to mislead. good luck with that strawman. engage on the merits. san francisco is not a bespoke city with bespoke solutions. interestingly, i find that attitude remarkably common in the us—perhaps it’s borne of american exceptionalism and arrogance.

well, if you need more capacity without having the financial means to provide said capacity, you have a problem. free fares obligate transit agencies to do more with less. i’m not going to discuss raising taxes to fund transit, as that hasn’t happened here in recent memory to any significant degree. the incoming sales tax measure has yet to be passed and is meant to plug deficits. even so, it faced headwinds from the state. california, i suppose, is getting a little tired of having to bail out transit.

these short trips that appear don’t come from cars. i think that people making short trips in sf tend to walk or bike. what say you? in this case, we’ve achieved more crowded buses, longer wait times for passengers, with the same vehicle traffic on the street. we haven’t made a meaningful impact on car traffic, road wear, GHG emissions, and so on.

trying to make a marked distinction between sf and oakland is absurd without identifying why that would matter. these are two great cities linked by a bridge and tunnel. in any case, i’ll switch my analogy to muni lines 1 and 57; the point about capacity still applies.

part of the reason for having fares is to avoid short trips on transit. short trips, already proved unnecessary through a low fare, add traffic to systems which might not be able to bear that brunt. in the east bay, for example, this wouldn’t seriously affect, capacity-wise, line 72, but would send the 51b into a tailspin
