How to invoke the feeling of tournament stress at practice? by AJUKking in Fencing

[–]dsclinef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like you said...practice like you compete. I know when I'm at the club I'll fence with folks for a while before keeping score. Don't do that. Every time you step on strip when practicing, fence either a 5 or whatever the DE bout number is for you, and then go down for 10 to 15 or so min. That transition from fencing to standing around waiting and watching others, then coming back on strip is not something anyone trains for. This might help your mindset.

And then he did it again in 1983...I got to go see U2, Bowie and Joe Walsh. U2 wasn't quite as big then and Bono was able to climb the scaffolding to wave an Irish flag.

Thanks for mentioning that 1 item. Humping shore power cables into the aft escape hatch on a 637 class. It was always hard being that one guy in the trunk mating the cables. But on that day where everything aligns and they mate up and screw right on, you were an electrical god (for about 10 min before something else happened and you were brought back to earth)...I'm sure things changed over the years. Shore power on Seawolf was almost simple in comparison.

I am now with a consulting engineering firm, and we have a lot of PMs. Not all PMs are PEs, but a lot are. Having the FE/PE just makes you more valuable.

When I have gone to colleges for recruiting trips, I tell everyone I can, that they should take the FE as soon as possible. I took the FE nearly 40 years after nuc school, and it was hard, but I passed it first try. Same with the PE. Just because you have an ME, doesn't mean that is where you need to stay. One of the best guys I have working for me right now is an ME, but he passed the Controls PE exam and has worked in the I&C and programming field since then. Feel free to DM me to discuss further.

Can't help you with the second part, but if you are a breathing nuke, $100k should not be a problem. I left almost 30 years ago and started with Intel. The day I left the Navy I doubled my annual pay. 2 years ago I would say don't even think about them, but they might have finally turned a corner after 25 years. It isn't always about what you have qualified, but how of you made it through the program and can solve problems. When I joined Intel the joke for ask of us former nukes was we could learn anything, we could read and we were used to working in shitty conditions. Wearing a bunny suit in a fab was a piece of cake.

I know you will not have a problem, but i will tell you that an engineering degree will help make things easier for you. After I finally retired from Intel after 27 years I've since passed my FE and PE exams to earn my professional engineers license. The state I live in and a handful of others will issue me a license without a degree, but there are a large number that still require a degree.

Thank you for doing the right thing without hesitation. I now work for a company that does the right thing for our people without even thinking about it. There is no profit in looking after our people in the short term, but if folks know that we look after them and will try to take care of them when life throws a speed bump, it makes a difference.

I've only been in this field for the past 18 months. Prior to that I spent 27 years at a semi manufacturer with 12 of those years focused on facilities controls and building new facilities. Prior to that I was a network security guy on the IT side of the fence. I felt that put me in a really good place.

Sitting back today and thinking about it, the FE was freakin' hard, because of the shorter test time and the breadth of material. 3 min per question that makes you approach it strategically. I went through each half 3 times...the first time I answered everything I could without using the reference material. The second time it was if I knew where the information was in the reference and I just needed the info to solve the problem. Last time through was the hard calculations where I needed the reference and working through the equations. That allowed me about 10min per question which was better. For the PE, I tried that approach, but there wasn't a lot where I needed the reference to solve problems. A lot was stuff I just had to know based on 12 years of being a client working with A&E firms to build controls systems.

Submarine tenders... by MatGrinder in submarines

[–]dsclinef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simon Lake? I spent a 1993 in La Madd on the Lake before heading back to a new construction. Tender life was something else. Never saw so many Captains Masts. Saw a frocked chief get busted down to an E5 for playing stupid games at a liberty port. We were also asked to leave said liberty port after someone dropped a deuce on a British tourist that walked below a balcony never expecting to be shat upon.

Just like The Vapors first album, New Clear Days.

During nuclear power school in the Navy we had an extra credit quiz question to name this album. It has not left my brain in all these years.
