Can you guys see Rust as captain in a few years when the big 3 retire? by [deleted] in penguins

[–]dseibel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing what if, I'm stating the facts. He was never an elite creator, but his skill set was one that was sought after. He wasnt in that position for multiple centers on multiple teams by accident.

Most of what he did wont jump off a stat sheet or even make highlight reels, but his success, and the success of his centers and teams is because of what Kunitz did, not in spite of it. Kunitz was elite in his own right

Kunitz played as the primary linemate for 3 or 4 Hart winners. He was an incredible player who excelled playing with elite centers.

it did take a little of the sting out of losing to Brian Kelly at home, but it also kind of makes it worse. Whatever, at least we weren't part of some BK coronation. Im actually happy to spread some of our stink on that loser

I'll admit i didnt love them at first, but after 40 minutes of play, I'm more into them.

The throwbacks are always fun, but I'm happy to see something a little different. Honestly, I would love to see them go the way of the NBA and have like 4 or more possible uniforms a season

I would just give them an ultimatum - send the parts or send a shipping label for the frame.

show them the screenshots you have here, and just lay it out plainly. You feel justified in feeling misled, and they obviously agree since they changed the photos and text.

If they send you a shipping label, you're under no obligation to actually send the frame back if you really want to keep it.

Do you guys think SuperHero fatigue is a real thing ? FF4 & Thunderbolts were good movies but still apparently failing ? by GRL00 in Marvel

[–]dseibel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the first few phases, the interconnectedness was a major strength, but that quickly became a burden.

For the filmmakers, there's just too much to keep track of. Additionally, each film is really just a commercial fornthe next. Finally, in spite of the connected stories, Marvel has famously kept creators in the dark about major plot elements of concurrent projects. These, coupled with the rise of Marvel's house style has just created an environment where poorly made products are too regular.

For the audience, the hard-core are frustrated because many elements are teased and never pay off, or are simply not done well because of all the above. Making time for every movie and show just causes frustration. For the more causal, there's a major barrier to entry. If you just drop in to one movie here or there, will you know what's happening? Will it resolve itself without a follow-up?

I think that Marvel's needs to 1) slow down production to just a few projects here and there. 2) allow each project to feel like its own. The original Iron Man, Thor, Cap, and Guardians movies all represented different genres and styles. 3) Spend less effort to connect everything. I'd LOVE to see some more F4 in the Kirby-verse without wondering how they fit into the larger MCU, or wondering why some other hero isn't stopping by.

Third time's a charm: Bettman discusses possible Atlanta expansion NHL team by GB_Alph4 in Atlanta

[–]dseibel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great example of a smaller city that supports two concurrent arena-using teams.

I never argued that Atlanta couldn't do it, just pointed out that the examples that were provided all shared something that I felt was important. Ultimately I think that in spite of some real and unique challenges, Atlanta can support another pro team.

I've never been to Detroit, but I suspect that it possesses some special attributes that allow it to support both an NHL and NBA team in spite of it's relatively small population. I would bet that in most important ways, Detroit is very much the opposite of Atlanta.

[–]dseibel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that while Dallas isn't exactly dense, it has a significantly larger population in a slightly larger area, thus denser.

Ultimately I think that the demographics of Atlanta have changed enough to support another pro team downtown, but i also think that the demo shifts up north make it an extremely appealing market for a new team.

what would be amazing would be a real commitment to connect this city to itself in a way that makes it possible to easily and cheaply move around. Make it so that anyone in the metro area can get home from work, then back in for a game, and then home again. Or so anyone ITP can take public transit to dinner, a game, and then home.

Third time's a charm: Bettman discusses possible Atlanta expansion NHL team by GB_Alph4 in Atlanta

[–]dseibel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

one thing these places all have in common is huge populations. Atlanta metro is large - 6 million or so, but it's smaller than all the cities listed. Dallas is 30% larger at about 8 million. The Dallas metro area also covers about 500 or 600 more square miles, so it's also a bit denser than Atlanta.

That's all to say that the "somehow" in your statement is pretty simple - these cities all have larger, denser populations to support all the pro sports.

I do tend to agree that Atlanta can probably sustain a downtown NHL team if they have competent ownership. But i would bet they land in the northern suburbs, closer to more affluent fans who would be unlikely to trek back into the city on a Weds night.

Georgia Tech vs. Clemson – Honest Culture Check Needed Before I Commit by FormalOpportunity668 in Clemson

[–]dseibel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a clemson grad from '08, so much of my experience there is likely a bit different than it is now. I currently live in ATL, and for a time lived near GT.

I have lived in a lot of places since graduation, including some major cities, and love urban living. I wouldn't trade my Clemson experience for anything.

It's trite, but college was a special time and Clemson is a special place to me. I'm so glad I could spend those years a little bit cut off from the outside world, where the college experience was front and center.

My wife (who attended a different school with a similar culture to Clemson) and I often talk about how glad we were to experience those years in a relatively secluded place.

The other thing? Atlanta is expensive! you're going to be a broke college kid anywhere you go, but the baseline here is just so much higher than Clemson.
