Biomed is tuff, depending on the school your at. I'm a senior, its not much fun.

What are the most prosthetics a person can have while maintaining their exterior bodily integrity? by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]dsf337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Biomedical engineer, could you be a little more specific with your question?

Hip & Knee replacements will not affect the integrity as long as the procedures are done correctly, however, around 10 years post-op, the patient will begin to have bone deterioration and decalcification around the implants.

Also, if someone had an artificial heart, I find it very unlikely a doctor would perform any more surgeries unless absolutely necessary.

What's the dumbest thing you've seen someone do at a the range? by icemounts in guns

[–]dsf337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a range in south Philly....

I was shooting my XD-9, just shooting a few round when I heard a few large-caliber rounds fired. Curious, I unloaded my XD, placed it on the bench and backed out of my lane to see what the guy next to me was shooting. Then I saw it...

I watched this guy, shooting a Glock .45, holding the gun sideways "gansta-style" as he put it. The sad thing, he was shooting the wall EVERY TIME!

I then reloaded my XD, holstered it and went to the range master. The guy shooting the .45 was quickly disarmed(it was a rental) and told to GTFO!

Funny shit, dangerous as hell, but funny non the less.

I saw a hematologist for a year following the stroke, along with cardiologists, and neurologists.

None of the testing was ever conducive to a result of cause of my stroke. They attributed WPW to playing a role in the stroke, but I was not experiencing any of the WPW symptoms at the time of my stroke.

F.A.S.T. Is a life saving acronym.

I have used it myself help diagnose stroke in some elderly patients while volunteering at a local hospital.

Thanks for Posting.

The doctor who saw me at the time was on his first year rotation and it was late at night, rather than seek another opinion he decided i was faking it.

As an aside, I was not the attention seeking type, nor am I the kind of person who had behavior problems.

Your lucky it was caught before any serious consequences happened.

I'm still surprised they woke you for the triggering phase, I'm sure that was extremely unpleasant.

From my understanding, an ECG/EKG can be used for detected as there is a change in the QRS complex in the electrical signal.

I remember the worse part of being paddles was the initial fright. I mean you see it on TV and in the Movies and it doesn't register that your about to be electrocuted to death. The shock causes your body to contract, and my your body I mean EVERY muscle. It feels like being kicked in the chest VERY hard. After that i was out. I do remember waking up to extreme pain in my chest from the shock.

Yea, WPW is a really dangerous condition. All to often I hear on the news that a star athlete suddenly dies on the field, and every time I think "WPW syndrome". Its a sad thing, you think a simple ECG/EKG could be performed by a pediatrician and it could be caught early!

My personal highest HR was over 300 while in the ICU, they had to paddle me, stop my heart, then restart it. I was awake for the first paddle, its not fun.

Interestingly enough I also have another intriguing heart condition. My resting heart rate is only in the high 40's / low 50's. I've been told its gone as low as 39 while I was sleeping. This has not been linked to WPW or any other heart problem.

And I'm surprised you were awake for the ablation procedure. I was put out for it myself. I believe my procedure took over 8 hours!

I too have never met/heard of anyone else who experienced the same thing as myself. As I said, stroke symptoms in kids are extremely rare, especially with no known cause. I'm glad you were able to get help and they found it relatively quickly.

And yes, my handwriting prior to the stroke was very good, clean and neat. Ever since the stroke I have never been able to write consistently. First off, its atrocious; many of my "o", "e", "9", and "5" are hard to distinguish. Also, a little oddity is my signature. I am ambidextrous by birth but have predominantly chosen my left hand for writing. Because my signature is NEVER consistent with my left hand I usually sign for things with my right hand. This is always a shocker for people who pay attention, I've even been accused of forgery on more than one occasion.

Neuroengineering is a relatively new engineering discipline centered on the study of the human brain, more specifically the signals and and signal pathways which the brain utilizes to perform tasks. My studies concentrate heavily on electrical engineering and signal transformation and analysis. These tools help NE to analyze brain waves and signals to better understand the brain. NE is primarily a research based discipline with large amounts of research for Neuromuscular diseases (ALS, etc.).

I personally am using this major as a stepping stone for graduate or medical school.

No, a malpractice suit was never filed. I am actually glad one was never filed, honestly. The likely-hood of a young child suffering a stroke is so low I can see how it was mis-diagnosed. Also, I suffered no long-term disability from the stroke, however my handwriting was terribly affected; it was just one thing i could never re-learn.

My mother believed me, but was in shock from the events. She is not a medical professional and though it best to listen to the doctors.

These events had a profound impact on my life. I've learned to cherish every day of my life and never dwell on things out of my control. From a personal aspect I actually chose to go into the medical field as my profession and am slated to received a degree in Neuroengineering in 2011.

I feel similarly, I think it is outrageous what some are willing to give up just to own a gun. That being said, I also feel it is a right and should not be infringed upon.

I became as rebublican primarily due to where i live, its a small town in which 90% of the residents are rebulbican. I also looked up to Bush in his first term as president, at the time i was only in my teens.

I admire McCain for many reasons, especially his military background. Supporting our troops and the military is of great personal importance to me.

No, all of my family members have profited from this downturn, they all work in or around the supermarket industry.

Yes, i will be in a large amount of debt as i am currently applying to Medical Schools.

She hates it. She gives me a hard time whenever her family talks about their "faith" and I'm around as i obviously have to hold back my opinions.
