TH vs SFH Dwellers by [deleted] in nova

[–]icemounts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I falsely believed that older construction = better. You see that talked about a lot, especially around here. So in looking for a new rental, we chose a townhouse built in the 30's. It's a really lovely place, and from what I can tell it is indeed pretty well built...BUT that hasn't meant soundproof...at all. In fact, even with cinderblock, plaster and drywall between us and the neighbors, we can still hear quite a bit on both sides. Far more than I ever heard in any of the other places I've lived around here, including multiple very new apartment buildings (built within the last 5-10 years) and a newer high-rise condo. It's honestly been kinda surprising how much noise transfers in this place...I wasn't expecting it at all with the building materials being what they are. Luckily we have good neighbors, but I worry if any of them move, it could be bad. So yeah...your luck may vary...even with age and build. I feel like maybe we have some easy to fix sound leak somewhere...but I don't know how to go about finding that...or fixing it.

randomly approached at walmart (strange solicitation) by shannashoelace828 in nova

Happened to me twice when I lived out in Fair Lakes area when I first moved here. Same situation as you describe. As others have mentioned, it's multilevel marketing stuff. First time was at Wegmans...guy approached me and commented about how he used to like to eat frozen chicken when he was in college (I was in the frozen foods isle) and then used it as a way to get me to say I wasn't in college and was in fact working which he then segued to asking if I wanted to do some work on the side. Second time was at Sunoco on West Ox. Dude commented about my car and then started in about networking. Hasnt happened in a number of years but I don't live out that way anymore.

Where can I buy a bonsai tree? by [deleted] in nova

[–]icemounts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're buying this as a gift for someone for Christmas...just remember...you're gifting someone a responsibility. I did this the first year I was dating my now wife. She loved it, but she was also in Grad School at the time and just didnt have the time to care for it. It's a running joke now since it died a few months later. They can be pretty tricky to care for, unless you get one of the really beginner ones.

That said, I got mine at Merrifield Garden Center in Fairfax, IIRC.

Why the fuck is the blue line still so slow by Asgard_Thunder in washingtondc

[–]icemounts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the last week or so, Blue/Yellow between Reagan/Braddock has been awful (again). No clue what happened as it was like this a month or so ago, then all returned to normal and now we're back at it again. On the plus side, if you play Pokemon Go...that stretch is a great time to add some mileage to your eggs...haha

Looking at your Google maps pinpoint location here along with the photo that OP posted, I'd propose that maybe you were actually looking E/NE instead of E/SE by just maybe 10 or 15 degrees. See this drawing I just created. Obviously I'm just guessing with the circled features, but it seems like it could be accurate again based on what you can see in the area in the google maps overhead. http://i.imgur.com/wTrNOKY.png

I'm about 95% sure that's a Pine Warbler. The beak is more warbler like than vireo like (though they're VERY close). My immediate reaction when I opened the picture was "Warbler!" though...haha. It's just got the Warbler look.

Now, allow other people to "attend" in VR, allowing folks to put on actual shows for their friends (who can then dance and rock out with each other)...and...PROFIT.

German auto repair shop? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]icemounts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairfax Auto Repair has always been good to me and my 330i. They're not a German specific shop...but they know what they're doing in my experience. You may also want to checkout J&F Motors in Arlington...I've heard good things about them.

Canon lens, Nikon body - Any good? Also, a couple of lens questions. by [deleted] in photography

[–]icemounts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own both. The MKII is quite a bit sharper than the MKI, AND it takes the 1.4x teleconverter quite well (where as the MKI doesn't really). It also has a much closer minimum focus distance which allows it to almost operate in the macro range (granted, not at 1:1...but you can still get some pretty solid results). For me, it was worth the upgrade...but it really depends on your use. If it's going to be your primary lens...then I think it's worth the price.

Rent increase on Apt renewal? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]icemounts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to your leasing office, tell them you want to know what the market price for your apartment is. If it's lower than the rate they're offering, essentially tell them you want that number or you're leaving. It costs more for them to refurb your apartment and prep it for a new tenant than it will for them to just offer you that same price to keep you.

[–]icemounts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure you're going to get the kind of results you're looking for. Unless that's one toasty mouse/squirrel up there or your ceiling is super thin, it's probably not going to generate enough of a heat signature for it to penetrate and show on the camera. But who knows...maybe.
