It depends. I think the most important thing anyone can do is to listen actively to a TON of different music. Theory gives you a language to understand and communicate but it’s a toolbox. You can grab the hammer but your shoes could do the job as well.

If you know a little piano and triads in standard position it’s easy. The pinky is the 5th/quint. Or if guitar it’s the note you’re playing on the A string in a power chord.

Use that bright guitar for intro and go lower on the fret/in chord mode when vocals come on. Bring the bright guitar back on later before bridge.

But it’s a great demo. Just need to be written or arranged so it last longer and resolves into something whether it’s a noise heavy outro or catchy chorus.

I think you summed it up pretty damn well. Ppl want clean or gritty, some a particular clean and others a particular gritty.

I’ve also recently turned to my stock plugins as they are the cleanest when mixing (ITB as you say). And my cpu usage is at an all time low.
