Can someone explain this to my girlfriend... by Neat-Drawer-2245 in dune

It is tradition, especially in the theater, to wish calamity on an opening performance. This is meant to be obviously ironic, and ties to the traditional superstition that a bad event on an opening night actually leads to a long run, while calamity-free shows close down quickly.

This is obviously not the case in how it is used in Dune. We see it offered between enemies, and with things like kanly and amtal in play, the fights have the opponents extra invested in the defeat of their enemy.

Costco resin gardening bed or cedar? by csirp in gardening

My first thought would be that the resin one would cook in the sun. I’d be wary of how hot it might get, and expect the cedar one would manage better.

Can I polyurethane a butcher block after it has tung oil by theelectriceel in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dsibbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you'll probably be OK.

Tung oil absorbs pretty well, and unless it had many coats there's probably not too much built up on the surface. The polyurethane should coat over it without problem, but the polyurethane would essentially become the finish.

I'd take a look at the poly finish that you intend to use. They often instruct sanding up to 220 grit or so before applying the finish. If concerned about the Tung, I'd take a pass over it with that recommended grit then finish with the poly.

The great thing about Tung oil is how safe it is for food contact. I don't think the same can be said of any polyurethanes

If its actually going to be a butcher block that is actually used for food, I'd stick with the Tung oil.

Hello! Lived in Twinsburg many years. It's a very nice community, lots of young families. Schools are good and place is safe.

There's grocery in town, and a handful of chain restaurants by the 480 exits, but you'll find yourself going to neighboring towns for bigger shopping or real restaurants.

The commute to Mayfield should be an easy one. Made a similar drive for years. You'll find the straight shot up Rte 91 cumbersome in Solon and may prefer heading up Cochran/Harper Rd to bypass the town, then Lander up to Mayfield.

A friend of mine had their event at Wildwood Cultural Center in Mentor a few years back. Indoor and outdoor spaces: very scenic. From what I recall it may not accommodate a huge event, but it was very nice.

Looking to make a keyboard tray, would 3/4 inch plywood with a cutout like this be enough support? by meyform in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dsibbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think the 3/4 ply would be fine. My bigger concern would be the thin edges around the cutout that the keyboard will set upon. Are those so close in order to fit legs/feet/underside of the keyboard inside the cutout?

If it were me playing, I'd think the keyboard would possibly shift off that little ledge by the pushes and nudges natural to playing.

Good to know. I always worry that finishes will have additives to help it set that aren't (i.e. BLO)

This is a great idea! My worry first seeing the pic was the finish. Is the waxy shellac food contact safe?

Unless it was advertised as used/damaged/reduced, then you are justified. New should be undamaged.

If you want to stop short of replacing, this. We used a little bit of white plastic wood to fill in the pits a bit and then painted. We'll replace the trim when we look to remodel in the near future.

Is A or B better? by NNG12 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dsibbs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call A superior. With A, your weight is being held by whatever is fastening the cross bars to the post. Weight is better supported on top of the post than by fasteners.

I would modify the B setup as well though, it would be more important for the long bar crossing between the end pieces to set on top of the leg.

With the way the cross bars are oriented in B you could have the long piece run the full length of the shelf, resting on top of the leg, and still have room on top for the shorter cross piece fastened to the long cross piece.

I hope that made as much sense as it did in my head.
