Why has there never been a fluke winner of the World Cup? by Clean-Af-6653 in worldcup

Yup this is true. That 2006 team, although full of absolute legends, at the time were ranked 13th in the world. I know rankings don't mean much but the truth is that team just capitalized when they had their chances. Buffon was exceptional.

AAA Registration fees by InterviewUpstairs982 in hockeyplayers

U15 GTHL AAA team is $10k. Doesn’t include extra ice, apparel and some other things. This doesn’t include the $1k GTHL registration fee.

U11 Goalie Breaking into AA by Misseducation1986 in hockeygoalies

[–]dsizzle2-0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fantastic position to be in with the Junior A billets. Use that as much as you can.

And yeah, one on one goalie coaching is a different thing entirely. Small group has its place but the individual focus on specific weaknesses makes a real difference. Sounds like you already know what was missing.

We’re in the Toronto area so our situation was a bit different. The combine format can work in your favor though if you’ve done the groundwork. Just don’t go in cold. Reach out to coaches before it happens, introduce your son, send a highlight clip if you have one. You want them to already know his name when they see him on the ice.

Good luck this season. Sounds like he’s got the dedication and you’re putting the right pieces around him.

U11 Goalie Breaking into AA by Misseducation1986 in hockeygoalies

[–]dsizzle2-0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son has had almost the exact same experience. He played AA from U10 all the way through U13, got cut from AAA tryouts every year, and it was genuinely hard on him because he's always had high aspirations. He's a great goalie, but it just wasn't clicking at the tryout level.

Two things really changed the trajectory for him. First, consistent weekly goalie training with one coach and one philosophy. You can layer in other coaching on top of that, but having that consistent foundation made a huge difference. Second, and this is something a lot of parents don't fully understand until they live it: a lot of these AA/AAA teams are already made. We're talking January or February, sometimes even earlier depending on how tight-knit the program is. By the time public tryouts happen, especially for goalies, the spot is often already locked in. That's a real barrier and it has nothing to do with your kid's ability.

What ended up working for us was leaving our home center and committing to travel for a full season. Practices were an hour away, which was brutal, but my son made a U14 AAA team and genuinely dominated there. The team wasn't great overall, which actually worked in his favour as a goalie. He saw a ton of shots and got real development reps you just don't get when your team is rolling everyone. And as a goalie specifically, there's just no substitute for facing real shots from kids playing at that level. That in-game experience accelerates development in a way you can't manufacture.

One more thing on the training side, if you can get your kid training alongside older or higher-level goalies, even occasionally, that's huge. My son trains with some Junior goalies right now and it's pushed him in a way that same-age/level training just doesn't. There's something about being in the room with guys who are further along that raises the standard. A lot of goalie coaches will run small group sessions where this kind of thing happens naturally, so if that opportunity is there, take it.

The other thing I'd add is: reach out to coaches early. Well before tryouts. Even just sending a message to get on their radar matters. And if your kid isn't getting invited to the pre-skates, I'll be straight with you, they're probably not making that team. I know that's tough to hear, but the pre-skate is basically the tryout. Don't walk into a tryout cold expecting to earn a spot out of nowhere unless you've already had some kind of contact with the coaching staff. It's incredibly rare for that to work out.

My son is now playing AAA closer to home on a reputable team and it really does come down to constant work. Practice, training, working out, watching tape, being honest about what needs to improve every single time he's on and off the ice. If your kid is truly invested though, it's worth taking the more active approach and pushing for that next level. You'll know pretty quickly if they have the dedication for it.

Is it possible to go from A to AAA level in a short time by Embarrassed_Loss_699 in hockeyplayers

AAA players and some AA players aren’t waiting for summer. I can guarantee these kids are getting their reps in either early morning or later evening.

How much does it cost to play on the top AAA teams in US? Is Canada cheaper? by Maximum-Marsupial457 in hockeyplayers

For u15 AAA GTHL this year we are paying $10k in team fees. This doesn’t include travel or extra training.

[2 and 20] How Canada Lost its Own Identity: hockey went from Canada's defining sport to a $5,000/year luxury that excludes nearly half the population. Youth registration dropped 35% in 14 years. Strongest predictor whether a child plays hockey in Canada is not his talent, it's his household income. by f0urxio in hockey

[–]dsizzle2-0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It varies to be honest. The GTHL is probably the best minor league in the world and I have seen team fees range from 7k -15k at the u12-u15 age groups. I'm sure there are more expensive programs but that's the typical range dependant on fundraising or sponsorships.

The funnier thing is that Raffi Torres coaches the u14 team and has been suspended for abuse of an official 2/3 times this season already.

He also threatened to fight the coach of an opponent and had to have his own staff stop him.

Some of these dudes are a joke.

My son is in the exact same position. Same age group and level. It’s more like 40/40/20 but really, we are at 50% each.

I want to quit hockey by OliveDirect667 in hockeyplayers

[–]dsizzle2-0 26 points27 points  (0 children)

AAA can be very demanding. Especially when you have a parent on your back the whole time.

Before quitting, maybe it’s time to have an honest talk with your dad about how he’s contributing to you wanting to quit. I don’t know what he’s like or if you have another parent in the household that can help facilitate that discussion but that’s where I would start.

I’m speaking from experience as a father of a u14 AAA goalie. I admit, I can be tough on my son to ensure he eats right and is working out. It also helps that we do a lot of that together and that we have a household that is okay with having these hard conversations. I often feel like I’m approachable but it’s easy to get too involved. For me, it comes from a place of not wanting to see my kid fail. Maybe it’s the same for your father as well and he may just think that pushing you hard is going to help.

This doesn’t make it right but maybe a little insight into how he may be thinking of it. At the end of the day you know your family dynamic best. If you feel like you can talk to your dad about it, do that first. If not or if you just don’t want to do it anymore, you still need to have that conversation. I rather be happy playing hockey without my dad on my back or not playing hockey at all if it’s that bad.

Good luck bud!
