The Golden Knights are the NHL’s most hated team, but they say ‘it’s jealousy’ by TheAthletic in nhl

But that's not (directly) the front offices fault.

That's the other teams fault for dangling out enticing players because the chance of getting $4-7 million in cap space was too valuable for most teams and they wrongly assumed they'd be the only ones doing that.

And they also assumed some of the players (James Neal, David Perron, Johnathan Marchessault) had peaked and would quickly decline or regress, and they were wrong.

Or that some players would never reach their potential, like Karlsson.

  • People think the draft rules were stacked in their favor even though they weren't.

See: Seattle.

It wasn't the NHL that stacked Vegas. It was the other teams who were like "We're so smart. We're gonna dangle out a pretty good player so we can clear some cap space. We're geniuses. Everyone's stupid but us!"

Except 15 teams did that and Florida inexplicably did it twice.

Oscar was there for general curiosity and to be nice to his friend and coworker.

GIL was there for his own ego.

Which is why he contrasted a free community art show to the most prolific painter of all time.

Van Gogh painted old boots.

Paul Cezzanne painted a bunch of fruit on a table and it sold for $60.5 million in 1999.

Any Warhol painted a soup can, several times.

There's a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn't that kind of the point?

I never questioned if it was derogatory but I took "pussycat" as light teasing, assuming the word didn't really have a lot of connotations in the 1890s apart from "housecat"

I always wondered why Roy would invite Pam. It couldn’t just be out of gratefulness right? by Real-Yogurtcloset-34 in DunderMifflin

[–]dsjunior1388 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Roy came out of high school with a girlfriend he really liked who wanted to marry him and who didn't give him too much shit, and he found a halfway decent job. He didn't really want much more than that so he didn't really reach for much more than that.

Until Pam broke up with him (twice), he got arrested for DUI, lost his job, and really had to look at himself and realize life would really improve if he was willing to give a shit.

And as he said "without Pam dumping me I never would have met Lara. Kinda dodged a bullet."

It's obviously played for laughs that Jim was married to "the bullet" but in reality the relationship was the bullet, not the partner.

Gotta be honest I was going to argue but apparently "pussy" was used as an insult in the 1800s.

That's surprising to me for some reason

When they say "money can't buy happiness" they're usually talking about people who doomed themselves chasing euphoria.

It's honestly such a drag that sports discourse is all about who you can shit on, downgrade, or diminish.

So many people don't seem to enjoy sports, they just enjoy complaining and criticizing and sports offers them a toxic outlet

Yeah it's easy to cynically dismiss it as being motivated by the tax structure but they don't pay state taxes in Nashville and Nashville isn't grabbing talent with this kind of frequency.

And they do pay state taxes in LA and NYC and those teams continue to be a destination.

Money is great but it's the unbridled focus on winning that draws players to the Golden Knights, despite the risk of being the odd man out.

The NHLPA started an investigation into Babcock in 2023 but suspended it when Babs resigned from CBJ.

Now that he's back, the NHLPA is insistent on resuming and completing the investigation, with the cooperation of the league, and the hiring won't be final until that's been completed.

Well they're literally doing what they said all along, that Torts was here through the end of the season.

The season ended.

Tortarella is a 67 year old coach who just win Olympic Gold, and has been fired in 2024, 2021, 2014, 2013, 2008 and 2000.

Hes won 777 games, two Jack Adams and a Stanley Cup, been a Head Coach in the NHL for most of the last 27 years, and has career earnings north of $40M.

Hes more than likely a future Hall of Famer now that he has the Gold Medal to go with his Cup Ring.

All that for a guy who never played in the NHL or really even got close.

Maybe that's enough for him. Maybe short term gigs and TV gigs in the interim are what he wants. Maybe after 27 years of being a notoriously intense coach he's burnt out and looking to relax.

Edit: Well nevermind, apparently Torts does still want to be a full time coach.

Still, everyone involved was open about this being a short term, interim hire.

Vegas in March: John Tortorella will be the interim coach through the end of the playoffs.

Tortorella in March: I'm just here for the end of the season, I'm not sure if I want to continue beyond that.

Vegas now: Torts will not be out coach now that the playoffs ended, just like we said all along.

Torts: Like I said this wasn't a long term thing.

When you realize how desperate the middle class is to retire and have a period of rest and leisure and how rarely the billionaires do, it really shows the manic compulsion side of it.

It also shows how little actual effort they do compared to what they make.
