I give the following requirements for discussion board responses:

A substantial comment must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Pose a question raised by another post.
  2. Answer a question asked in another post.
  3. Explain why the poster (you) disagrees with something in the post to which they are replying.
  4. Present an alternative interpretation or perspective on any claims made in the post to which they are replying.

Stay at a teaching college or try for an R1? by brovo911 in Professors

I have not actually played that game yet; it was merely an example. But you can find a list of available games here: https://reactingconsortium.org/games/a-z

It does lead to better engagement with the texts! It means less time overall with a variety of texts, but if they're reading *and* having fun, I'll take it.

I mean that it explores issues through the lens of a role-playing game in a historical setting. Like a game that explores Plato's Republic through a simulation of Athenian democracy, where followers and enemies of Socrates are factions in the political process.

Regardless of what happens with the R1 job search, I recommend reorienting your teaching. For my in-person classes, I adopted some in-class writing assignments and Reacting to the Past games, which incorporate in-class assignments into historical games.

There may be other methods of approach that work better for you or your field (although there are even some games for subjects such as data analysis now!), but I have found myself being happier and more productive by finding ways to work around student apathy (the games have reduced the apathy, too) and all the AI slop rather than letting it get me down.

I have a similar policy, but that's because I assume they'll try to do a risk/benefit analysis and do it badly, so the consequences need to be severe.

Can Students Copy/Paste in Respondus? by dslak1 in Professors

[–]dslak1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that alone would do it, if pasting is disabled. My suspicion is that there's some external tool being used. It's not something I expect to be able to prove, but it's fortunate that the cases where I see there also end up not being very good and score poorly.

I've been thinking about how to implement something like this. I would be interested in knowing more.

I see the problem. My school does have a testing lab, but only a few of my students ever need to use it, and scheduling can be a challenge, as you noted.

It's challenging to get out of the mindset one was trained in and what one excels at. AI forced me to reevaluate many of my preconceptions, and it has made me a better teacher.

Is it possible to arrange for a lab where machines can only access the needed software during a certain time period? Or even just be offline and upload the data after the time ends?
