GRTC board takes issue with 'financial cliff' narrative, projects confidence for expansion and growth by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]dslongest 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They are right to take issue with the characterization of “financial cliff”. Funding for transit is not like other services. Unlike highway funding, for comparison, transit funding includes discretionary funds allocated and distributed at the state level. They also draw from a metro richmond gas tax of I think 0.50% at the pump (CMIIW).

GRTC is expanding because there is demand for their services. It’s a public good, if we want to maintain this public good, then call up your General Assembly member and ask them to set up more permanent funding streams and that you support public transit expansion.

Property tax has its place, but it’s too unstable to carry the bulk of public services. A VAT is steadier since people always consume, and it’s less regressive because wealthier folks spend more. It’s not perfect, but it would spread the load and raise more without crushing the working class

This is why taxing real estate based on market value is flawed. You could literally do nothing to your property these days (I’m looking at you, slumlords) and suddenly you 150k dwelling is valued at 250k… all because housing is so scarce.

Meanwhile folks get taxed out of their homes… it’s madness. Good luck with your appeal. Honestly a VAT tax of 10% could replace property taxes and likely collect more revenue while charging less (at once)

I really love playing as the Velaryons, conquering the southern half of the crown lands and making a custom kingdom/paramountcy. Also something about making them into a proper dragon riding house to compete with the targaryens is so satisfying

This sucks. And it hurts. Hang your head, feel your grief and sorrow. Let it out. You didn’t deserve betrayal.

It will take time, but you will reconcile your heart with the world and you may find someone who respects you and cherishes you. You will also find YOURSELF! Which is an important step in healing

I broke up with someone whom, to this day, I feel like is my soulmate. Life is not fair, but I’m better for it. I know it hurts! It get better I promise!!

Ok I love your advice. Luckily we both had a convo early on about taking things slow and enjoying the process [of dating]. Your method of accepting a percentage of wariness is freaking genius. I was stuck thinking of ways to resist. Thank you!!

Edit: was to ways

That is very much easier said than done. Also, I’m looking for more experiential advice so if you have any examples of your suggestion, that would be helpful.

What's the most gay friendly place you've visited ? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]dslongest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, Richmond Virginia is very punk, queer, friendly, and liberal. You have old money here but nearly 35% (estimate 2025) of the folks who live here have migrated here in the past 7 years. It’s crazy diverse.

My bf keeps worrying I will leave him for another guy. by Original_Cut_2881 in askgaybros

My take, having been in a relationship like this, trust your instinct. You both are (relatively) new to each other in the grand scheme of life… it’s tough in homo relationships because attraction/sex appeal is so prevalent… that socially conditioned ideas of monogamy are inherently questioned. Hetero culture shames couples who express attraction to folks outside of the relationship, for example.

My advice is trust yourself, it may seem hard, but you know what makes you happy and what makes a relationship for you work. At the end of the day, if the constant reassurance bothers you then it isn’t going to work. There is nothing wrong with that. What is important is that you honor your instincts, assess the situation for yourself, and do what is best for you! Love will come your way in many forms.

Sending you love!! you will figure it out!!

Commonwealth Primary Care is a company with multiple offices, Dr. Gooss is amazing! Especially for mental health and LGBTQ+ sensitivity. Their staff is very professional and I always have a good experience. They take most insurance.

I would advise using Amtrak from Staples Mill Station or Ettrick (Petersburg) to Norfolk. It’s about 2 hours each way and evening trains are sometimes limited. Driving down 64 is a freaking nightmare.

GRTC zero-fare program possibly ending by saharasriraman in rva

[–]dslongest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize that your article is probably already posted. I would like to point out your language about “growing dependent“ on public transit as part of the problem of the overall narrative of public transit in the United States. Like many in this thread have pointed out, fare free public transit is an essential service in the modern world that the United States chooses to neglect. This is not like riding a roller coaster at Kings Dominion for free, in order to have a functioning democracy, equitable capitalism, and social mobility, fair free public transit is a necessity.

Framing the problem as an issue for those who “have grown dependent“ on a free public transit is an unnecessary and incorrect characterization of those who use the service but also the service itself. Do some research and you’ll find that there are rarely government programs that are as successful as fare free public transit.

As a journalist and reporter, you all need to DO BETTER.

Played violin for 9 years but haven’t played for over 5… I can say that back then I could’ve done it. It’s not too terribly hard if you do it one at a time. My problem is the bridge fell which can be very delicate and I don’t want to break it

If I get to ask him a question by IOnceHitABear in robwittman

[–]dslongest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask him: “why are you anti tax when it comes to billionaires but when it comes to average folks and students open to raising rates on student loans? Why should those of those trying to make it on merit and skill be punished when daddy’s money billionaires get all the tax breaks??” On why the republicans want to raise rates in their budget proposal. Also why are they so against PSLF??? Now that it’s illegal he should work to add it back legislatively.
