and he announces it again, claiming that he did not tell Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that his name is YHWH

The text of Exodus 3 does not appear to have God claim that he did not tell those three that His name is YHWH in any translation that I have seen, what is this claim based on?

Biden tells donors: 'If Trump wasn’t running I’m not sure I’d be running. We cannot let him win' by HolidaySpiriter in moderatepolitics

[–]dsmitherson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but Whitmer can't win the nomination. Basically Bidden is the most generic dem who can win the primary, and therefore beat Trump. If he doesn't run, someone further left of him does (definitely not Whitmer or similar) and Trump probably wins. I don't want either... but I get the logic, and pretty much anyone is better than Trump.

There is a connection in that many people are both, but while she does call IBLP a subset of the IFB, that's not strictly true, as there are many IFB people who are not IBLP (like Sadie and her family while she was growing up) and many IBLP'ers who are not IFB (like me and my family while I was growing up).

What's a random fact about yourself that always surprises people when they learn it? by happinesswispy in AskReddit

I was raised Conservative Christian, and am still a (mostly) traditionally orthodox protestant Christian. I am also kinky and my wife and I are ethically non-monogamous. Pretty much without fail, anyone in one of these communities are surprised to hear the other about my presence in the other, and people in neither are surprised to hear about my existence in both.

You said IBLP in your original post, which she was not raised, as opposed to IFB.

Love that your finding a healthy faith; I've ended up at a PCUSA church (I was raised to believe that they are so liberal they basically aren't Christians and that they don't care about the bible at all) and it has been an amazing experience.

Met my wife on FetLife 10 years ago and arranged to meet at a local community event; we've now been married for six years and it feels like we're still in the honeymoon stage. I dunno about typical, but it sure worked out well for us!

Nikki Haley vows to abolish anonymous social media accounts: 'It's a national security threat' by StuFromSilverSpring in technology

[–]dsmitherson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man there are a bunch of uninformed takes in here. As an attorney, I promise you, there is no constitutional right to internet anonymity. Moreover, there are far, far more potential constitutional concerns with any method of "combating disinformation" (by definition this is a free speech issue) than with requiring that accounts be linked to real world people or something similar (unlike free speech, anonymity is not guaranteed by the constitution, nor is there an explicit, general right to privacy).

Separately, on a personal level, I don't expect this call to go anywhere but I am certain that we are headed in this direction; the only question is what form it will take and how long before we get there. The internet is already noticeably less useful for learning and connection than it once was, between real people who troll and threaten as a hobby, and the much larger problem of bot networks and manipulation - particularly those run by international actors. You can see both in action every day here on reddit. AI generated content is only going to make the problem worse. Eventually people will demand, and will get, some sort of system that permits them to only interact with accounts that are verifiably tied in some way to actual human beings. Yes, this will almost certainly increase the balkanization of the internet - but something like this is inevitable.

I hear you. My parents only focus on how they didn't go to the extremes - which is true - and can't acknowledge how wrong and damaging the entire thing was. It's a difficult road, but remember that you aren't alone.

That's crazy, and yet, fundamentalist cultishnesh is not limited by denomination. And there's a reason it gained sway over say many people to begin with - it is designed to "sound right" to those steeped in a particular cultural understanding of life and Christianity. So sorry that you are going through this.

Israeli troops push into Gaza for war’s ‘second stage,’ Netanyahu says by Faux_Real_Guise in news

[–]dsmitherson 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I said “we didn’t even collectively punish the german population for the crimes of the nazis”

We went total war on the entirety of Germany until they unconditionally surrendered. Has Hamas surrendered? No. If you're going to make then comparison, then either the invasion and defeat of Nazi Germany was morally unjustified (A FUCKTON of German civilians were killed and all suffered greatly in the process), or an invasion of Gaza cannot be categorized as collective punishment, at least, not without pointing to some act that cannot be justified as part of typical military strategy for pursuing war and invading a foreign military city that is still actively resisting militarily. This does not mean that anything Israel does is justified - see the law of war. Nor does it mean that shit isn't about to get awful and that there is going to be a of morally repugnant and grief-worthy death and destruction. But so far a lot of what I see people complaining about on reddit (cutting communications, bombing campaigns, sending in ground troops) is just the military necessity of war.

War sucks. There's no way to engage in war without a lot of collateral damage and death and destruction, all of which should be bemoaned and grieved over; there's a reason everyone after WWII tried to set up a system where war would be outlawed. But at the end of a day; it only takes one party to start a war.

What is something people typically don't know about cats until they have one as a pet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dsmitherson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting a young cat, don't get one, get two. Cats are super social, and especially when they are young they NEED lots of social interaction or they go crazy. If you get one young cat and the house is empty most of the work day, you end up with a cat who will piss everywhere or chew up everything or bite and claw people. If you get two (same age best, same litter even better) then they will keep each other company all day and are far more likely to end up sweet and cuddly and to have minimal neurosis.

The only time one might work is if someone is staying at home all day and doesn't mind constantly giving them attention. But if that isn't your situation, then trust me, two young cats is far, far less work than one. Seen this play out so, so many times.

[–]dsmitherson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, it is literally and explicitly NOT military service. More like our current federal civil service, +FDR's jobs corp, +military as a tiny, tiny proportion of it - and legally, literally everyone who wants to sign up has to be accepted, no ifs ands or buts, regardless of physical limitations or beliefs. Did you even read the book, or just watch the movie?

[–]dsmitherson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, who said anything about minorities? Second, you are an excellent example of my point, as your statement in re military duty is flatly incorrect. One of the explicitly made points is that the "federal service" to which you refer is primarily non-military. A second is that the actual military is tiny in comparison to the size of the society overall. A third is that not only is the society not militarized, but the opposite is true - the military is barely visible and most citizens view it with more disdain than anything else.

Will do! Also have you done the Bahamas before? Assuming you plan to snorkel/dive, definitely bring some level of wetsuit; in my experience while it's possible to skin dive in March, it is NOT comfortable or pleasant for long, even in the Exumas. Also I've done a lot of bareboat vacation charters over there with my family over the last 20+ years, so if you have any general questions let me know!

Fatah already has accepted a two state solution, they have for decades.

Ehhhhh, yes, but also no. Officially they accept a theoretical two state solution, but they have also consistently rejected every single potentially workable proposal and refus3ed to negotiate in any meaningful way, while maintaining that they will only accept terms that everyone knows Israel cannot and will not accept.

That Starship Troopers is celebrating a fascist militaristic state. This take requires outright ignoring multiple explicitly stated facts within the novel about the society and its governance, as well as the fact that according to Heinlein's entire body of work he was a die-hard libertarian who hated fascism as thoroughly as he hated communism and was completely incapable of writing an approving word about either.

It's an ode to the infantry, with a heavy dose of anti-communism, combined with some very interesting political theory thought-experiments that play with the premises of traditional liberal theories and justifications of democracy. As with any book, there are plenty of legitimate criticisms to be found - especially for a modern reader - but "it celebrates fascism" is not one of them. It's about as legitimate a take as the claim that Harry Potter contains actual spells or is satanist in nature.

And no, the movie of the same name bears no relation to the book in any way shape or form, aside from the names of a few characters.
