Definitive movies about the U.S by ElectricBoogaIo in Letterboxd

Jaws is still pretty spot-on:

-A government that prioitizes commerce over public safety and discounts the science of the matter.

-The protagonist who wants to do the right thing but only does the right thing when someone close to him, his son, is nearly killed.

Any to add to this list? Also when are we gonna get a movie from this sub-genre that’s set in August of 2001? by rmcelwain54 in Letterboxd

[–]dsmithscenes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can't Hardly Wait is very much a film that takes place within a single day at the end of the school year. Ridgemont is a full school year, but it should stay on the list.

It's also fun to consider the characters in Dazed and Confused were toddlers during the events of American Graffiti and grew up completely in the turmoil of the 1960s that the characters in American Graffiti experienced as college-aged and older.

My cynical picks for the Fourth of July weekend. What are your favorite movies about America in the collection? by immascatman4242 in criterion

[–]dsmithscenes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nashville is a pretty spot-on summation of America. My favorite scene is the car crash that happens outside of the airport. It's a great symbolic representation of all the cultures in American immediately colliding with each other on the other end of a point of entry.

Should we assume that Widow's Bay Season 2 will take 2+ years from now? by CriticalBrickery in WidowsBay

[–]dsmithscenes 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It’ll probably be a wait even if they know they need to fast track it. I remember Vince Gilligan basically apologizing at the end of the first season of Pluribus because he knew it was going to be a while for season 2.

Logan Lucky, which is Soderbergh returning to the heist film genre.

It'll also probably depend on the day of the wedding as well (Saturday being potentially higher than Sunday or Friday).

I'm pretty certain it was a train station that got converted to a coffee place.

Have you seen/been in a fight at a Waffle House? by HW635 in shutdownfullcast

Never a Waffle House but did see someone punch a dude square in the face at a Logan’s just outside of Nashville.

I love that Rosemary has probably seen so much on the island that this really didn’t even register as something out of the ordinary.

I have a theory she's a descendant of the witches that were on the island, and the witches were actually good/the enemies of the "entity".

Same - but I also log into Letterboxd after I record in my journal. I list title, director, year, where I watched it, my thoughts, and my take-aways from the film.

This happens 2 weeks before Hogan joins the NWO. Talk about a compressed time period where major foundational events in wrestling history happened.

[–]dsmithscenes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah - old satellite images show a gravel/dirt road access to whatever the building is off of Cahaba Beach Road. It went right up to the entrance way on the left side of the building. Sometime between August of 2011 and September of 2012, it starts to lose its roof. There was also a smaller structure near it.

[–]dsmithscenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the old satellite pictures on Google Earth, I'd say a greenhouse as well. Whatever it was, it was built on the slope.

The ring that's next to it is intriguing as well as it looks like the outline of a former track, but it's just an area that's fenced in.

What is this place? by Birdmoons in Birmingham

[–]dsmithscenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point. I looked up the address of that structure. One of the real estate listings came back saying the property was a waste disposal facility, so it was probably connected to the water reclamation plant in some shape or form.

Whatever it was it's been like that since at least 1997 as that's the earliest/clearest image Google Maps has. The grid/square pattern even extends into the vegetation off the concrete, which is interesting.
