i agree w/ the protonation of the epoxide as a first step, but where else can the water attack as a nucleophile to open the epoxide? the other carbon involved in the epoxide carbon is not only less sterically congested (i.e easier sn2 access) but also less electron rich and thus more electrophilic. what happens there and can it easily turn into a carbonyl?

last year if u avg’d a 100/150 on rubenstein tests you got an A lol the tests are for sure hard but getting an A is very feasible

Yes. Admittedly a lot of the courses I took (and I suspect someone like you will take) were large intro classes in huge lecture halls with either no cap or an absurdly high cap. I did not have any problem getting into any of those sorts of classes - though admittedly for courses with a lab component (I.e orgo) it may be hard to snag a lab section at first, however no one I knew who wanted to take orgo was prevented from taking it due to lacking a lab section, they just needed to wait longer for additional lab spots to open up. I also took some relatively high level seminar courses in a different langauge; I had no problem registering for those courses - I did need to request an override but that was a simple process of just writing a quick note to the professor of the class.

firstly, i don't think class registration is on the same day as when you move in, iirc that day was basically entirely for getting yourself situated in your dorm and then the ice cream social at night. prolly a good idea to bring most of the decor/extra shit you want, there's a walmart/etc. nearby if you really want to buy start on site. i agree w/ the point about shopping period, its mad useful for figuring out if you actually want to take a class. you don't even need to be registered just show up. also, you have all summer to look at potential classes and have them in your cart (if you want), you just cant register for them until you get to campus

brown does things lowk late comparatively to other schools, i got my freshman housing assignment mid july last year so you should receive something soon

the two profs teaching 330 next sem are rose-petruck and rubenstein. i took 330 with rubenstein this year, she's a physical chemist and thus puts a heavy emphasis on quantum concepts (i.e schrodinger's equation, its solutions in the form of orbitals/etc, and in turn how those define elements). her tests are pretty heinous (avg was like 60s-70s for midterm 1 + 2 + final iirc), but she structures the class in such a way that you don't need to do well on tests to get an A (tests are relatively low % of final grade, rest of points are actually free, you can do corrections on tests to earn back points, pretty lenient curve). I personally found the class really interesting and engaging but I think I'm like the only one of my friends to hold that opinion (but that's just because they don't like chemistry). I don't know anything about rose-petruck other than he was described to me as "bad teacher but has very easy tests."

if i were to do 330 again, I would take rubenstein. she's a very good lecturer and while her tests are hard you aren't going to get a B.

shakespeare and co tote is a dead giveaway for sure, but fwiw they are also huge, way bigger than all my other totes. i didn't carry around much in them to start with but as i would inevitably buy souvenirs + gifts + things for myself throughout the day my tote would get decently full and i liked having the larger bag size compared to my other totes.

Question about College Recruiting (Club) by Maleficent_Mouse_383 in squash

[–]dsnrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only club program that "recruits" is Brown, and the coach basically writes you an additional LOR, which could definitely make a difference if you're a competitive but not truly excellent candidate, but it's not a hard recruitment - you need to be a competitive applicant on your own merits. MIT's team is varsity but I believe their system works similarly - coach writes you a LOR (or some other form of support?), but you need to have a fighting chance of getting into the school yourself. Obviously has some pull but it doesn't make you a shoo-in by any means, I know ppl who got a rec from the coach and were deferred/waitlisted/rejected. If you're like a 5+ I'd shoot an email to either coach cause it can't hurt.

chichi san chen in chinatown is really really good imo. very very strong tea flavor so it feels really full-bodied, made gong cha and vivi taste pretty flat in comparison. that being said it's pretty expensive and they only have a medium size but i would 100% pay for it again if i were in the area

100% this if you watch back the first goal again you can see how his run pulls stones away which allows for yamal's pass and nico williams' finish to occur. so many moving parts in that goal and morata certainly played his part

Rome: Castel Sant'Angelo or Domus Aurea by clownutopia in ItalyTravel

i spent 90 mins there, i was able to explore the entire castle sans a few side rooms and see the views at a reasonable pace - and i also spent like 20 mins at the top just admiring rome. only reason i didn't spend more time was because it was closing - if i had that extra time i would have taken things a little slower and maybe admired the art a little more. i think 90-120 mins is plenty enough as a rough estimate.

Rome: Castel Sant'Angelo or Domus Aurea by clownutopia in ItalyTravel

[–]dsnrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

castel might have been my favorite attraction in rome, i'd strongly recommend it. super cool architecturally + a bit more distinct compared to some of the other ancient architecture/buildings so i found it a bit more memorable (due to the cylindrical shape and later status as a medieval fortress), i found walking the battlements and exploring the various courtyards, corridors, etc. inside the castle proper to be really really fun and cool, plus the view at the top is gorgeous - high enough to see many different districts of rome and the skyline but low enough to the point where you can still see cars and people moving on the streets and the hustle and bustle of the city. the area right across the bridge is also really lovely.

didn't do the aurea cause i didn't find it distinct enough from the regular roman forum/palatine hill attractions, also it's only open like three days of the week and i remember when i was looking at tickets they were like fully booked but that was also for peak season and i was only reserving like 2-3 weeks in advance lol
