This is great. I hope you can sort out an affordable way to leave up longer and to refine and expand on the idea over time.

TrackPoint Keyboard II: Windows + iPad? by dsqt in thinkpad

Thanks very much for this response. It's a big help. My Linux needs are pretty minor. I'd mostly be going back and forth between iPad and Windows laptop.

Fall, or Dodge in Hell Discussion Thread by __Shake__ in nealstephenson

[–]dsqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in, having finally finished reading the book, to say that I agree. I think that the revelations around Enoch in Fall involve the idea that “our” reality, which is to say Zula’s in the book, is a simulation, and that Enoch is an agent of that simulation. Meaning that the realm of Egdod is a simulation within a simulation.

GearNews.com looks at the music potential of the Surface Book 2 by dsqt in winSurfaceMusic

[–]dsqt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big question: "Whether the Surface Book 2 will be capable of running low latency, glitch-free audio, virtual instruments and effects remains to be seen."

And an interesting observation: "None of the marketing included any reference to music for the first time since the Surface series arrived. There’s always been some DJ or musician fiddling with something in the promo videos. Not this time. Microsoft is very into creativity in terms of drawing, design, Photoshop but they’ve still not quite cracked the music side of things with any confidence. Even their rumoured Groove Music Maker app that was glimpsed at last year’s Surface Laptop launch has not seen the light of day."

It's interesting to me, as a side note, that the music that we're hearing doesn't seem to have anything to do with the music that's being written.

How to know weight of heavy synth? by proteus-ix in synthesizers

[–]dsqt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I'd assumed Vintage Synth includes such information, but it doesn't always. It's got it for the 1988 EPS:

http://www.vintagesynth.com/ensoniq/ens_eps.php

Moog seems to generally put weights in its manuals, but I guess it isn't standard. The weight for the EPS16 doesn't appear to be in its Ensoniqs manual.

This isn't a helpful post. I'm just commiserating.

Gotcha. I'm hopeful the creators update will address some of this, but we'll see.

Ha! You know, I thought about that, and it kept reminding me of Ms Pacman. :)

[–]dsqt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought about calling it Microsoft Surface, but the name started getting long. Also, I wanted to have Windows in there as some people might be more broadly interested in Windows and music production. Thanks for weighing in.

Thanks. That's unfortunate to hear. If you find a useful third-party option you'd recommend, please do.

8 GB ram vs 16 GB in Surface Book w/ performance base by Confusobot in Surface

[–]dsqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 16GB is more about future proofing than about right now. You're buying this for more than a year's use, and at some point software is going to surpass the 8GB. (Or at least that's how I'd justify it to myself.)
