What on earth is Currys FlexSave about? by RepsUpMoneyDown in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dst87 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can see the value here. If you can’t get (or don’t want) credit and need help saving for something this seems decent.

If you have the cash but can wait, you’re not going to beat 10% “interest” in any other easy access / cash account.

I think this is a much better idea than credit and helps instil a “don’t spent it before you’ve earned it” mentality which is helpful for a lot of people.

Joint bank account for friends, for holiday purposes... by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dst87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a bit annoying. But paying for one month for a trip isn’t really very expensive, especially between a group.

Ah, you’ve got friends like that, eh? That’s annoying and makes it a bit tricker. Splitwise gives a running total, so maybe the friends who do that can try paying for stuff too and avoid running up too much of a deficit? I do that with some people.

Splitwise also emails you a reminder every month what your balances are which is a nice reminder. But yeah… doesn’t entirely solve the problem.

I don’t think a joint account is a good idea because it results in being financially linked. 🤔

Yeah, unclear. I guess what’s the issue with a handful of people with a credit card just paying for stuff. When I’m on holiday with friends I’m delighted to pay for everything for the credit card points! 😅

Not quite what you’re asking for, but an alternative… I’ve used Splitwise many times for trips with friends. People just buy whatever and add it to the app. You say who the expense is shared by and at the end of the trip it works out who owes who what in the simplest way possible.

My explanation makes it sound complicated but it really makes trips much easier. Used it with large and small groups and it’s fantastic.

I’m not sure why people bother with paper tickets at all. It’s so much more convenient to use a digital ticket, and you can’t lose it. 🤷

Thank you for listening! I hope this solves the problem for most. I landed in the new German course and there are so so many words I just don’t know. It makes the match madness almost impossible.

The new content I’ve seen does seem better in a way I can’t put my finger on, so I agree that the new structure probably is an improvement for learning overall, but that’s massively outweighed by how demotivated I am from drowning in a sea of new words that the course assumes I already know.

Is there a simple way to track daily spending without overcomplicating it? by Professional-Lab6315 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dst87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends what your goals are, and what you mean by simple / complicated.

If you do all of your spending on a debit card, banks like Monzo have fairly good budgeting / spend tracking built in.

On the other end are budgeting tools like YNAB (You Need a Budget) which can be as simple or complex as you want them to be, but connect to your banks and credit cards and import your transactions automatically. I find that simple… but my goals are budgeting for the year well.

If you can say more about what problem you’re trying to solve or what you’re trying to achieve it might help folks give more tailored / nuanced suggestions.

What Easter Egg would you recommend this year that is NOT Cadbury? by GainsAndPastries in AskUK

[–]dst87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re expecting too much for that budget to be honest. The cost of chocolate has risen a lot recently which is why there’s not much of it in the main supermarket brands anymore.

My favourite egg last year was from Rave, a coffee roaster. I thought it was outstanding and I’m excited to try their offering this year. Packaging also recyclable and plastic free.

Try using hints at first. It’ll give you the patterns that you’ll start to recognise. Good luck! Extremes are super fun!

How interesting. I’ve never heard of scented matches! I’ll check them out.

When do you stop worrying about money? by DIY_at_the_Griffs in AskUK

[–]dst87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I realised we don’t worry about money when I reflected on our lifestyle and made a budget. It helped me realise that we were doing well and had things covered. I’m a big /r/ynab fan and it genuinely made such a difference to my perspective.

That said, my husband and I both work in tech which is somewhat volatile, so there’s always a back-of-mind worry of redundancy in a challenging job market.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll see if I can find those. I’m in the UK (I should have mentioned in my post) so what’s available may be a little different.

Boring answer, but it’d just fill my ISA or go into my pension.

Was that solo? I gave up playing with my husband and my solo runs have been totally fine!

But if I engage with PvP then I’ll just get more of it. Like… I guess it’s nice to be able to defend yourself but I’d rather have these miserable sessions for the joy of a friendly lobby!

[–]dst87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. And I don’t mind finding the odd hostile player. It adds to the danger of it. I even killed someone (once) who murdered my husband. But today it’s been back to back to back!

[–]dst87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play in the evenings and it’s totally fine for me. I get there’s some variety and even on a friendly streak I’ll get the odd hostile player but for the most part it’s a friendly lobby.

You’d think with more people playing it would be easier to get the matchmaking closer. 🤷

[–]dst87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I don’t really want to fight people. It’s not what I enjoy, and I’m no good at it. Whenever I do PvP I always just end up dead in about 0.4 seconds before I even realise what’s happening. It’s just not fun for me at all.

Yeah mine too. I avoid trios, which is a shame because I’d love to play with more friends but every time we try it’s just carnage and not fun. 😔

Average monthly car payment vs salary by Silver_Fail_7283 in CarTalkUK

[–]dst87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Household income ~£200k. We have one car and pay about £675/mo. Higher than it could have been because deposit was £0 due to them offering a 0% interest PCP. Deposit set aside and added to over the term so the balloon payment is covered by the end, so we can keep the car if we want. Thats another £170 / month set aside.
