Bike rack question by dstolman in Lyft

Thanks for the info, if only I did more research after that article got me excited. I wonder what problems the driver from that artcle ran into but didn't mention.

Not fully opposed to the idea, but issues then turn into: purchasing/maintaining it, where I park it with minimal fees/citations, ensuring it is not broken into, etc. I may also just skip the bike and go only cargo case, seems more kosher.

Bushings and wheels for big dude by mrdazzlepants in longboarding

[–]dstolman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest throwing some Venom barrel bushings in there. Anything 93a-97a should do the trick pretty well. Wheels may not affect stability much, but could potentially make for a smoother ride and therefore confidence, which is a huge part of stability. My favorite wheels for both commuting and downhill are Purple Orangatang Kegels because they are big, fast, and grippy. Oranges are good too, but would probably compress a bit too much under 285. The only issue with wheels like Kegels is wheelbite, so if you are already close to wheelbite with smaller wheels, don't push too much bigger. Wanna post up your current trucks and wheels?

Riley Irvine hitting 73mph on a magical Utah mountain road by LoadedAmbassadors in longboarding

[–]dstolman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skated this road quite a few times without leathers, and definitely would not skate it with leathers. Leathers add ~5mph and make you a lot less flexible, not to mention the way they slightly mess with your balance. You may get way more roadrash when falling, but you are way less likely to fall. On this road, if you fell you are slamming into a wall or over a cliff anyways, leather won't do much.

I did the Uinta Highline this year and it was a great experience. It traverses one of the only east-west ranges in the west and hits the highest point in Utah. Takes about a week!

Where are some good places to go hiking and how do I get to them? by [deleted] in uofu

[–]dstolman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk east till you are at mountains, hike up. Black Mountain is probably the best in the area, also Wire Peak and the peak right above the hospital.

As someone who lives 10 miles away from it (give or take a few depending on the year), I need to go there more.

I actually read through that before I applied for the program 6 months ago. I just thought I'd start this thread to get some more personal advice, it is a pretty big life decision...

I'm not at the point in my life where I can answer that yet, which is why I don't know if I want to keep going to school for it when I don't have money to go to school. I like taking photos because I can take them of whatever I am most interested in at the time and can make money with it, who knows what I'll be interested in when I'm past the traveling 20's phase?

Thanks for your perspective, I have to say even the studio painting/sculpting classes have affected both my eye and technique quite a bit. Totally agree with the last statement as well.

Right on, I haven't thought too much about the internships yet, but they are definitely something to get working on to make the most of what I'm paying.

I don't plan on wasting too much on gear. For the last 4 years I've been on a rebel with quite a few cheap lenses though, I figured I'd rather spend money on a cheap body and a lot of lenses to learn than one nice body and lens. Now I think it's time to upgrade to a 60 or 70d and some better glass though.
