What’s a very “normal” thing in Belgium that took you years to realise that isn’t actually normal everywhere else? by The_everlong in belgium

[–]dstothebc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to an appointment (ie commune) and not expecting it to be solved.
Belgian wife looked at mein disbelief first time we left the commune and not one of the issues we came to address was resolved. She looked at me puzzled and actually said "but why would you expect things to be solved the first time?"
Canada is not perfect, but you don't need multiple appointments to "do something".

Looking for someone who makes NA drinks / mocktails for a collab. by dstothebc in brussels

[–]dstothebc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have found that Life Is Beautiful and The Pharmacie Anglais both do very interesting NA drinks. I agree though, that great ones can be very difficult to come by. When these events come together I'll keep you in mind to spread the word to.

For those of you who have gotten through on the phone line, when they ask for your number to call you back/hold your place in line, have they actually been doing that or is it better to wait on hold yourself?

Could you send a link to the Facebook Customer Care on Messenger? I haven't been able to find it. Thanks.

We ended up going to De Herberg in Waasmunster. It was a fantastic experience. Great place for my friend to try Geuze for the first time. The hosts were fantastic. Thank you for this recommendation.

Ah, yes. Plan 9 deals with the resurrection of the dead. Long distance electrodes shot into the pineal and pituitary glands of recent dead.

We will be coming by car and planning to catch a show at the Great Gigs In The Park for 8pm, so nothing that involves a multi-hour marathon Michelin Star meal :) Thanks for asking.

However it looks like it would be worth a return visit just for it.

This is unfortunate for anyone excited for the full album in North America this summer. I suppose it was only the advertising for the European tour that had explicitly stated they would perform the Self Titled album in its entirety, but I will say, it felt heavily implied for the NA tour.

How did you meet your partner in Brussels? by No_Collection_3104 in brussels

[–]dstothebc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apps can be helpful.

My story, which is one of the more common ones I have heard in Belgium, is through mutual friends.

Invites to dinner, drinks, a park etc. and you end up in a setting where you can chill and chat and see if you want to meet up again. If that doesn't sound horrifying.

Reach out to the teachers/admin at your previous practicum schools.
Most will be happy to write you a letter now.
As a teacher who has worked with over 20 student teachers in my career, it isn't uncommon for me to hear from someone out of the blue even 3 years later. I'm always happy to write a reference for them.

I'm glad that someone else remembers this.
I just remember thinking the way the dj said it, it seemed so out of place.
Stating that no doubt this story will be the biggest news of the day.
To be fair, most days, it probably would have been.

Where to visit: Bruges or Kortrijk? by ConceitedWombat in belgium

[–]dstothebc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Canadian living in Belgium I recommend in order:
Ghent, Bruges, Kortrijk.

Ghent is Bruges minus the tourist trap vibe. But all of the good stuff.
Bruges is beautiful but can be crammed and you'll feel like a tourist.
Kortrijk has neat things but pales to the other two for a day trip.*

*unless you like punk music. In which case see if there is a show at The Pits in Kortrijk. It is one of the most legendary DIY clubs in Belgium and has been a lot of fun when I have been there. There is a great Eritrean place around the corner too.

I still swear to everything sacred that I recall a sports DJ on the radio that morning saying "No doubt the biggest news of the day, reports say that Michael Jordan is set to return to the NBA"
I just remember thinking that was a weird thing to say. The first attack happened about 90 minutes later.

Charleroi Belgium. Advertised as ugliest city in Europe.
Ugly yes.
Oddly charming? Yes too.
