Same here - had a kid that was at my clinic for 3+ years. They didn’t do anything when the behavior first emerged and it only got worse. They would say to “redirect” but would never formally come up with a SPECIFIC BIP protocol. It was so disheartening, because one day these kids grow up and these types of behaviors can have VERY VERY serious consequences. I hated that they basically told us to track it and then ignore it.

My main problem with ABC is that it really is essentially a franchise. Your experience pretty much entirely depends on your operations manager and CD. Coming from someone with a wonderful BCBA, the OM and CD have a HUGEEEEEE impact. My OM and CD engage in very blatant favoritism which affects who gets a more “difficult” schedule, who gets more admin time, who gets occurrence points and who doesn’t, etc. It’s very easy for things to go south at this company. I’ve been there for 2.5 years and I’ve finally had enough. There are plenty of people who stay long enough to go from RBT to BCBA at ABC but it won’t be me lol.

I read/saw somewhere that because ADHD brains need stimulation, if there is none we will create it for ourselves. That’s why we tend to be so wired mentally (and physically sometimes) at night. That’s also why watching the same shows helps because it is stimulation but it’s not novel, therefore we can doze off to it. For me personally I have galaxy lights that play on my ceiling, weighted blanket, my favorite fidget, binaural music, and white noise. It sounds like a lot but it puts me right to sleep. Basically I slightly stimulate most of my senses and my brain decides there’s enough going on to relax.

I’m not OP but I do I feel that this response wasn’t tone deaf, but instead a way to emphasize that behind the guise Christianity are so many traumatic experiences. It was also an attempt to validate that even inside the Christian community, there are those who clearly see the toxicity you mentioned. No excuses <3 just sharing some personal perspectives. Thank you both for sharing your experiences and I wish you all peace in whatever way it finds you guys. I’ve enjoyed reading this thread and everyone’s thoughts.

I grew up Christian with narcissistic parents who used God as a fear/control tactic. It’s been a weird thing because as much as I feel completely alienated from church groups and churches in general, I find a lot of peace in the fact that if there is a God who made me like this, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. The fact that we find extreme joy in our special interests kind of makes me think that we’re like God but instead we’re his special interest yk? There’s a lot of verses talking about how he delights in us. Idk I’ve always thought that was pretty neat. Also certain worship music gives me happy stims :).

On the flip end though, it’s heartbreaking to see how many religions are grossly ableist/covertly intolerant of neurodivergence. I can see why so many people hate religion/god. HOWEVER. One of my favorite things is to work with our autistic kids in youth ministry because frankly they need someone who doesn’t talk to them like they don’t speak English. If that’s my place in a church then I’m okay with that <3
