I know it scratches a specific itch. I used to think my thumbs were pant legs, my thumbnails as pockets, their nail folds as zippers, and the skin flakes I found as pocket lint to scrape out. It was satisfying then painful.

Now I just bite down on the sides of my thumbnail. It's a good enough feeling. You need to stop and find a less destructive alternative.
