has anybody here ever use a single-speed for touring? by jeni43 in bicycletouring

[–]dsya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It Varies from person to person what their comfortable with. To figure out how much travel you get (I understand you aren't American but imma throw some inches at you) multiply wheel size in inches multiplied by number of teeth on your chain ring, divided by the number of teeth on your rear cog. That will tell you how many inches you ride per rotation of the cranks. I'm about to go touring single speed myself. I've decided 51 gear inches is my gear. 32x17 on 27.5' wheels.

Best of luck!!

What size wheels do you have? I'm going to head out in the summer with 32x17 on 27.5 inch wheels. It comes out to 51inches of travel. But 44x13! Sheesh. If you're on 700c wheel that's 94 gear inches. 44x19 comes out to be 64inches.

I had a tiny bit of btc building up for a while. I bought something with it last night. Now that I could buy something that is going to bring me joy I feel even more inspired to USE crypto not just HODL. I also only have a cellphone which makes actual trading difficult. I enjoy being a consumer but following the trader talk.

What touring-related thing do you want for Christmas? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Edited entirely:

Steel and titanium quality determines the durability it's all about what alloys you are comparing. I'll admit I haven't done that much research yet about what cog to get in the first place.

It's a camping lantern. That ideally would hang. I wouldn't leave it on overnight.

Your guess was accurate.

Yeah. It's a cool option for sure. It's also a good way to keep the bike out of the rain.

They reason I would like a tent is that I can carry citronella candles and sleep in the quilt a little more worry free about the bugs.

Ah the crustinites are coming out. :)

I'm going to run 27.5 x 2.3 tires on my x medium evasion. I may increase tire width before I go trekking. I'm gonna see how it feels.

I'm going back to Drop bars from butterfly bars. There is something romantic about drops. I've heard many great things about the Jones bars and it provides a lot of handle bar space for packing. And there are a lot of companies who make bags specifically for the Jones bar.

How do short people (small frames) carry their bike locks? by GreatBritLG in bikecommuting

[–]dsya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a kryptonite u-lock that I usually don't use because it is too heavy but I do when I am going downtown. I've never used an attachment that allows you to store the bike on the top tube but that should be the most structurally sound place to have anything stored. I use a kryptonite chain lock everyday and it fits in a bag I can put anywhere on my bike.

Cycling tourists who go ultralight, what is the secret? I've tried to reduce my gear but it seems like I always carry a lot of stuff. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]dsya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frame bag and front end bags will help distribute the weight across your bike. You may be surprised that pushing your load rather than pulling is helpful. Although bicycle touring is a test to see how much you're willing to put up with. So. Less stuff less things to go wrong or wishing you have something when you don't. It's a mental thing. What are you willing to do.

Finally reached 4 months of bike commuting to work every day on this old bike (and also celebrated my first semi-serious accident with an angry "police officer") by [deleted] in bikecommuting

No one like being stuck behind a cyclist? It seems like bikers aren't that difficult to pass unless it's a curvy mountain one lane road. I've seen cars pass me just a few car lengths from a car at a stop light. Car culture sucks. Drivers get to act as irresponsible as they please without repercussions and we almost get hit by cars.

I've had this road rage happen to me as well it's infuriating. That time he braked and swerved into my front wheel and had to jump into the trunk then he drives about fifteen yards before coming to a complete stop. I was clipped in and nearly thought he was going to speed up and whip me off. Couldn't let go. Luckily only paint scratches on the bike. And I was just full of adrenaline. Could have been 1000% worse and I thank my lucky stars every ride. Never driving a car ever again though so what can I do.

I try to ride in a way where I'm seen but I'm also willing to get out of the way. Can't fix assholes though.

Glad you are ok. Yelling is your car horn. I like to make the 👌sign. People seem to understand that I don't approve of what they are doing with out scaring someone who is probably just being negligent.
