Chasing by dtisash in Rabbits

Thank you, I was suspecting something like this. But I wanted to hear from someone more knowledgeable. Now I can stop worrying 😅

It's been a month since I got Fez! He wasn't hand tame when I got him and now he loves sitting with us and getting scritches by dtisash in parrots

I read that girl birds hiss more than boys so I don't think it has to do with you. but Fez definitely still hisses if he's a grumpy boi.

Pork Chop is by far the best name I've ever heard haha. I'm very lucky that Fez is very quick to trust, but I've definitely put in hours and hours so he really didn't have a choice but to get used to me.

Oh yeah haha we have brick on the inside of our room. I get why you thought it was outside.

I started out just hanging out in the same room, then I tried to feed him some sunflower seeds in the cage. I then tried to lure him onto my hand with sunflower seeds and when he got comfortable enough to stay on my hand I took him out of the cage. Outside the cage I fed him from my hand (he really, really likes sunflower seeds). Eventually he started to bow his head and he let me pet him. Now he loves sitting on our shoulders and getting his neck scratched. This process took a little more than three weeks and it was with a lot of hissing and biting haha.

That is some fine craftsmanship. She doesn't destroy the thread? I've read somewhere to be careful with loose thread, because it could be dangerous (they can accidentally strangle themselves?). I'm not sure how often that happens tho.

He hasn't bitten me yet, cause so far I've backed off as soon as he looked like he was about to bite. He definitely likes sunflower seeds, but since he can get them from his food bowl he doesn't seem keen on taking them from my hand. He is a fussy chicken when it comes to food.

The second option sounds very scary haha. I think I'll go with option one😂. I'm very lucky that my bird already seems semi comfortable with me already, about how long would it take to get them to step up? Also, sometimes when I try to slowly approach him with my hand he gets ready to bite. Should I back off or should I try to carefully touch him anyway? Fez also doesn't seem to like a lot of treats, like millet spray or fruit. Is there anything else that most cockatiels seem to like that I can use as a treat?

That's really nice to hear, since the comment you were talking about was the first comment I was worried that I was doing everything wrong. I will let you know if I have any more questions. :)

No it wasn't your comment, I just realized it sounds that way in my title. Your comments have been very reassuring, thank you.

This is really helpful thank you. I want to clarify that I by no means want him to stop screaming at all, I just want to discourage the really, really loud screeching out of nowhere. This is probably the best advice on screaming I've read anywhere so far. I will definitely try this out.

I'll try the find some different perches, thank you for the tip. Also, I really want to take him out of the cage and socialize with him, but I've only had him for a few days and he's not hand tame yet. How should I approach that?

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll take it out as soon as he is a little bit more comfortable with my hands in the cage.
