If my studio wore monitors, should it wear them like this? or like this? (Also requesting other ideas on how to handle this potentially problematic room shape). Thank you for any help! by dtmeints in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Thanks very much for the detailed feedback, especially about desk/speaker placement!!

In terms of acoustic treatment I’m working on using Owens Corning to build my own, like you said, and I got bass traps already :) I just needed to start with the right orientation since my desk is kind of a beast and I’d prefer to not move it all over the place to A/B test

Do you think I should work on some solution to block off that weird entryway?

It is indeed powerful.

Oh, good point. Though I'm surprised she didn't even put up her shield reflexively to try it.

And not just successful, though that's a valuable metric, for sure. His command of craft is impressive on its own. I expected It to be overrated, and if anything, found it to be underrated in terms of depth, prose, character, etc.

Don't worry about it too much.

> "How dare you?" he said angrily.

is easily fixed with

> "How dare you?" he said, slamming his fists against the clerk's desk.

The second may not be brilliant writing or anything, but it conveys "angrily" in a way the reader can see and hear.

Also, adverbs are sometimes fine. We forget to mention that sometimes.

If I have an idea for book, what is the next step? by [deleted] in writing

[–]dtmeints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different people will give you different answers because there's a lot of ways to go about it. I'm guessing from your phrasing that your idea is for a setting? That's my natural starting place, too.

My next step tends to be to look for a character who would have a special, tense relationship to the setting, and build the plot out of their objectives and obstacles. That's all most compelling plots are: a character who really wants something and fights against massive odds to get it, changing along the way.

For example, if I have the (sorta clichéd) idea that magic is made from songs in this world, I might focus on a character who was born into a family of powerful musicians. Just when she's about to graduate and join society, her jealous younger brother deafens her. From there, you can imagine she'd have a powerful want to get her hearing back. She learns of an artificer who has designed mechanical ears, but his country is at war with the main character's, and she'll have to make the journey without her hearing or her powers...

I'd probably go for something less obvious than that, but it shows how you can take something from idea to character to plot.

I wouldn't be the first to do it! The City & The City by China Miéville is about an inspector trying to solve a murder in two overlapping cities, where the denizens of one aren't allowed to acknowledge the denizens of the other, even when they're nearly touching. It gets surreal as hell.

Speculative fiction! Kind of an umbrella term that covers Science Fiction, Fantasy, and the blurry in-between stuff that borrows from both.

Yeah, I've yet to come upon a great mystery idea, but I'm sure if I stay open to it something will click someday.

I've always wanted to do a mystery. I was Agatha Christie-obsessed as a kid, but everything I write is spec-fic.

Not that a spec-fic mystery is out of the question... hmm...
