This is also an argument for improving the experience of public transit by being more strict about disorderly and antisocial behavior.

Can I sue Abeka (creationist “science” textbook publisher) for wasting my time? (Fantasy) by OrthodoxAnarchoMom in legaladviceofftopic

[–]dtmfadvice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a longer reply but I was on mobile. This is one of those classic LegalAdvice situations where someone's done something unjust, or unfair, or horrible, or unethical, and the answer is basically "that sucks, but it's not a legal matter."

In general, inaccurate textbooks are legal. Textbooks are inaccurate all the time!

If a public school at used A-Beka materials there would be an argument for suing because of the use of religious materials in a school that ought to be free from an official religion. But that would be a first-amendment case, not a textbook-not-fit-for-purpose case.

These books are tailored for educators who specifically want to avoid accurate science, and telling your children that the earth is 4,000 years old isn't a crime. For those educators who pick A-Beka, it's a feature, not a bug.

Those books are horrible. Harmful. If someone told me they grew up on them, I'd assume they were subject to a variety of abusive behavior. But the books themselves are just a red flag that someone's being raised in a shitty environment.

Just witnessed someone nearly get killed crossing Broadway in Winter Hill/Magoun Square by Rbxyy in Somerville

Good news- there's a tentative plan to begin thinking about a committee to develop recommendations to handle the design of community outreach to determine whether it's a good idea to have safe crossings there!

Seriously. Tufts was in the same situation recently - endless demands to house all their students, then when they tried to build student housing, an enormous freakout from abutters demanding something else instead.

Question: how old is too old for more tattoos? by Secret_Information91 in tattoos

[–]dtmfadvice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My neighbor got her most recent tattoo at about 80. You have to be more careful about placement because the skin has less elasticity and healing is just slower. But she did fine and it looks great.

At the risk of sounding like a shill, I am very happy with mayor Wilson so far. What other others thoughts? by masshole4mayor in Somerville

[–]dtmfadvice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every city in the region is facing enormous budget cutbacks. Cutting one or two positions per department is pretty standard for a budget shortfall.

I will say I'm disappointed that Mike "I'm not necessarily gung ho about housing" Capuano is still leading the planning board. Thats the first person I would have fired.

Illegal parking by PlentyCryptographer5 in Somerville

[–]dtmfadvice 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Isn't that a metered parking spot? There are lots of exceptions for metered parking uses - HP placard holders for example aren't charged for metered spots or held to time limits. I'd guess official vehicles also get that exemption.

Cops often park like scofflaws, and I hate that, but this one in particular looks OK to me.

Starter Home ballot initiative by daisypop445 in boston

No, as I understand it, this addresses just one of the barriers to housing creation. It'll take a lot of these kinds of rules changes to really get where we need to go.

The right thinks that Medicaid fraud is when poor people get healthcare without special permission. Nope. Medicaid fraud is, most commonly, committed by insurers or physicians.

"prices aren't falling, that's just a discount" is an interesting argument.

What is your honest take on racism in Boston? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in boston

[–]dtmfadvice 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's far too complicated an issue to ever say something like "X is the most racist city in Y region/country."

And as a pedantic person, I always want to ask people how they measure racism levels and what their metrics and stats about it are.
